Stick, don't you get to choose the topic of your Oral Presentation? I think Language Analysis for my school was always centered around a specific topic (in our case, 'police chases'). I guess it's up to each individual school though :P I think a few of my friends from other schools didn't get a choice either.

No I don't get to have a say. Perhaps I may have had more passion if I had my own topic, but I'm quite content with this one. There's no other topic I have on my mind at the moment, so I don't mind. I've already got some ideas formulating in my head too, which is good.

Also, the 90 page booklet is really helpful. I've been able to study the issue from 75+ perspectives as well as gain a lot of evidence. The problem is that everyone else has the same information, so I may need to be a bit more resourceful to stand out from the crowd. Luckily oral presentations are my strength and I think I'll enjoy this task. :)

Wait, so your whole cohort has the same topic? ???

Yes. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It makes it much easier to compare the quality of students' responses.

Our school has chosen identity and belonging
the texts are GUAIA, Twelve angry men, skin and bypass.

although I must admit, I wish we were doing one shakespeare play or life of Galileo (my inner drama nerd speaking!)

And for my oral, I've chosen to do it on factory farming, we present it third week back.

Anyone else doing Skin? I did it this year - not really sure as to how popular it is (I don't think it's as popular as Growing Up Asian in Australia).

I enjoyed analyzing it, it's quite short and has quality directing. After you watch it, and create your own interpretations with notes (around the time of the SAC), be sure to read the Age's piece on Skin (found online in the Education section), and some notes/quotes compiled by others.

It's not really a movie I'd be likely to watch in my own time. Having said that, you should give it a leisurely watch over the holidays - it'd make analyzing it later on a breeze!

Edit: Here's The Age's article . The Age produces quality stuff for a lot of VCE subjects!

I did this combination for my English studies (totally neglected the other book) and I really loved it, you can consider yourself lucky.

That's a pretty interesting approach to Context, I guess it makes sense if your cohort is diverse (like most are) and if you're not pressed for time!

Reading and Responding:
  • Year of wonders
  • Stasiland
Context: Exploring Issues of Identity and Belonging
  • The member of the wedding
  • Growing up Asian in Australia
From what I know so far, Years of wonder is first, followed by the member of the wedding.

We also have an oral presentation, week 5 term 1. Any suggestions for an issue, as we're given the option of finding our own.
Also, has anyone read Stasiland, because currently, that's the only book I'm hesitant about. :/
