Chemistry 3/4 2013 Thread

I've decided to make a Chemistry Unit 3 and 4 Thread for 2013.
Post any chemistry questions you have, or simply if you're doing this subject next year and just for general (chemistry-related) discussion.

 :)

Moved this from the end of year exam discussion boards to the chemistry boards.

I posted this up in another thread , but I think this question is more relevant in this thread. I'm not sure how to delete threads , so yeh?

I was reading through the study design and I realised in unit 3 aos 1 , they said that we did not need to know the instrumentation and operation of chromatographic and spectrospic techniques. So does that mean in the exam they won't ask things like , purpose of cathode lamp in aas or monochromator in uv - via spectroscopy? And if they don't , what sort of questions could pop up?

Thanks in advance!!

Thank you!
Can you give an example of what you mean by "principles"?

The theory on how that particular analytical technique works and why it gives that particular data e.g. AAS works on the basis of electrons absorbing energy, each element has a different number of electrons hence each element will produce a different spectrum which is why we can use AAS to identify this information etc. and all the other stuff involved there. (it's a bit more detailed than that, but along the lines of that kind of stuff)

Examples of questions, hmm, from VCAA 2011 - Q18 MC, Q20 MC and I guess the explain questions would require knowledge on the principles too

Check out the sample exam. My guess, it will be more difficult to finish in time than it was for pre-2013 chemistry students.

Looks like VCAA has a broken link on their website, the above one doesn't work for me either.

Does this one work? http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vce/chemistry/Chemistryexamsample.pdf

Very excited ! :) They're putting emphasis on extended response . I think its going to be harder. :) Hopefully ,they'll feel sorry for us , because we're the "new ones" next year, but i dont think there is a very high chance of that happening.

I think someone noted that generally the first exams under a new study design are set easier to assess its effectiveness. I can't vouch for that though.
