Science Scholar Program vs Science Advanced with Hons

I m thinking about doing science (major in pure mathematics), and I have the ATAR to get into either of these two courses. I did a lot of research as well, but I still dont get it: what is the fundamental difference between these two courses?

I'm not sure but from the name of the course, science scholar program sounds like a fast tracked science course while science advanced with honors seems like a fast tracked program with a focus in research.

Haven't seen any of the course guides though so this is mainly my opinion. I just know that science scholars gets a special room which everyone crashes anyway

Thanks people :)

And is there any AN members actually enrolled in one of these courses or having any friends do?

Where could I find more info about this? I keep hearing different things.

Why don't you ring Monash and ask them this simple question :

'Is a merit scholarship automatically attached to the Science Scholars program and if so, can you point me to a link on your website'.

Make that phone call now, and report back to the forum in 10 minutes :)

I called before but when they put me through to scholarship info I had to leave a message. Also, I sent them an email in which they replied saying there are no courses with scholarships attached, but a few older mates have told me that they have received scholarships with the scholar program.

This is jadams, reporting in :)

EDIT: sorry If i seem to be spamming these forums with seemingly the same questions...just started to get a bit frazzled regarding uni options

Thanks, mate :)

I had a look last night after you raised your query, and I was able to find out that all other scholars programs are entitled to the 3 x $6,000 deans merit scholarship.
I admit, that the science one was not *specifically* mentioned, whereas all the other ones were.
This leads me to believe that a scholarship is available and the omission of the science scholars is just an oversight.
But ... But .... Call and make sure

Universities are lazy bureaucracies, jadams.
That's why websites such as AN and Whirpool are so popular. Sometimes it's the only way to get quick straight answers.

If I was running Monash Uni I would have a team arranging meetings with EVERY student of your calibre and personally explaining to them what Monash can do for them.

I 100% agree with everything you're saying. It's such a hassle to work out what I am eligible for/being offered, and even then, they have scholarships handled through faculties, so I'm left in the dark having received an engineering offer, but left without any idea as to whether I'll be offered anything for science. I definitely can't be the only one in this situation.

There is a user called "caramel" who did the Science Scholars Program. She's not a member on the forum anymore but she's in the chatroom most evenings. If you pop in around 7-8pm she'll probably be there and you can ask questions in real time!

Also have a look out for "amalgam", he'll be on IRC too. He's a current Sci Scholar student :)

Hi, I don't post much, but just to give my two cents' worth:

I'm pretty certain that there is no default scholarship attached to the Science Scholar Program. Of course, you're eligible for all the usual scholarships (Outstanding Achievement, Exceptional Achievement, Excellence, Excellence and Equity etc.), but so is everyone else with a sufficiently high ATAR / background considerations.

The confusion is probably warranted, however. The official course page, at http://monash.edu/study/coursefinder/course/1120/ says, "Because this is a competitive program for high achievers, we recommend you apply for a scholarship." From this, I would conclude that there's no scholarship immediately attached to it (though the anecdote at the end does appear to give mixed messages). Also, not all of the Science Scholars in my year have a scholarship, so I assume it's not default.

Regarding the difference between SciSchol and SciAdv, Jinxi makes a good summary. SciAdv is more tailored to those with a research focus (compulsory honours, and a unit about research in 2nd year (SCI2020)). While it is true that one can finish a SciSchol degree in under three years, personally I don't know of anyone who has ever done that (and it personally does not seem like such a big incentive to me anyway).

I think that the only other major difference between SciSchol and SciAdv is a slightly greater degree of freedom of unit selections in SciSchol. Both are still superior to the regular Sci degree in my opinion, because both offer work experience opportunities, a chance to do more advanced units/special research units, and some 'leadership and mentorship' opportunities (and a slight amount of prestige).
