If you're sure that you want to be a doctor, I would probably lean towards the Monash option - it's shorter, you get to be doing what you want to do right from the start, and it's financially better. In terms of networking, I'd guess that Monash ends up with more high achievers in their medicine course than Melbourne gets in their biomed degree because of the scholarship.

Probably.
(I don't know, I'm just assuming since they like to get high achievers in there)

Yes. Well, at least that's how it was last year.

If you're still unsure about biomedicine, I urge you to come into the university and talk with the student cohort in the brownless library.

Do you want to specialise? If you wantto be a GP, or if you want to specialize in an area that is less competitive (like dermatology, emergency medicine, general surgery), then I would go to monash. If you're looking at more competitive specialities like neurosurgery or cardio thoracic surgery, I would say Melbourne. If you're not sure, I would say melbourne. I feel like Melbourne is the better option in the long rub, bit monash is better for short term.

Issue 1: Education
Preclinical: Heard Melbourne has better preclinical theory and such
Clinical: Heard Monash has better clinical practice and such
If you want the best clinical practice, Flinders is the Uni to go to. Their graduate program is for clinical practice the best.

And if you want the preclinical theory on the best level as well, why don't you do BioMed at Melbourne and then the graduate program at Flinders?

Careful. You sure the uni you go to determines the specialty to that level? What makes you say that?

Re: Abes, I think when you get to specialising, they don't really care much at all about your degree tbh.

I checked with the royal college of surgeons when I was in year 12. They said that official policy is that your uni doesn't matter, but unofficially, selections are influenced by your uni. Yes that's not right, but Rhys what they said to me.

And I feel that there are very competitive, and less competitive specialities. Neurosurgery has between 9 and 11 spots per year for australia and new zealand combined. I may be wrong, perhaps they're all equally as competitive, but I don't think that's true. If anyone has some figures, I'd be more than happy to revise my beliefs

So it's really just a matter of bias really....

And abes I think Graphite is trying to say that dermatology is just as competitive.

Then again, doesn't matter to me, I don't want to do surgery - I want to do cardiology. :)

According to the chair of education and training at RACS who spoke at a student surgical conference last year, by the time you're applying for surgery (or any specialty) training, they don't really care about whether you have an MD or MBBS or what uni you graduated from-- they're more interested in the connections and impressions you've made on relevant people as a junior doctor.

As for going to Melbourne if you're aspiring for more 'competitive' specialties- I'd take that with a grain of salt, especially as there's no real evidence to back that nowadays!

This topic comes up every year, and yet everyone seems to be dancing around a question which goes to the heart of the issue, namely,

Every year there is a sizeable number of people who choose UoM Biomedicine which gives them a CONDITIONAL path into Medicine, when they have the choice of Monash MBBS which gives them a GUARANTEED path into Medicine. Why?

Edit: I don't know the answer, but interested in opinions

Are you sure? I highly doubt that there are many people who KNOW they want to do Medicine, yet go to Melbourne unless they have a guaranteed place.

There may be people who don't know whether they want to do med, so Melbourne would be a good option here.

This, and many go to UoM for the DDS pathway too.
