This topic comes up every year, and yet everyone seems to be dancing around a question which goes to the heart of the issue, namely,

Every year there is a sizeable number of people who choose UoM Biomedicine which gives them a CONDITIONAL path into Medicine, when they have the choice of Monash MBBS which gives them a GUARANTEED path into Medicine. Why?

Edit: I don't know the answer, but interested in opinions

It is not conditional, it is garunteed. He's a chancellors. Unless he fails biomed, he'll get to do the MD

There may be people who don't know whether they want to do med, so Melbourne would be a good option here.

I am reasonably confident that the majority of those hundreds of UoM Biomed students know that they want to do Medicine

Panicmode, I am not specifically talking about the OP, or toucan for that matter, because they have guarantees.
I am talking about the bread and butter UoM student, a large number of whom have the no-strings-attached path option available at Monash, and yet opt for the maybe path at UoM? Why?

Anyway, it's none of my business, but I believe it is a legitimate question which warrants a logical explanation.

Oh god not this again. If you want to do Medicine straight away without any doubts: go Monash. If you want to have a larger amount of science background / don't know if you want to do Medicine 100% go to Melbourne.

We're talking Chancellor's Biomed, not the hundreds of students in "regular" Biomed. And of the regulars in Biomed, I would say if the Monash MBBS was available to them at the end of yr12, most would have snapped up the offer then and there. Many are there simply due to lack of a competitive UMAT score.

I am reasonably confident that the majority of those hundreds of UoM Biomed students know that they want to do Medicine

I'm not sure how you can be so sure though. I know people in Monash MBBS who weren't even sure they wanted to do medicine when they entered the course.

Another reason to take the Biomed pathway is if you really wanted to explore another area (eg. maths, chemistry, etc.) in some depth and then move onto medicine (MD) or dentistry (DDS). But the vast majority of those who aspire for med don't want to do this. If anything, that says something more than the few that take the guaranteed pathway. Just think, the median ATAR of metro Monash MBBS kids is 99.30-99.40, all of them chose Monash instead when they could have got into Biomed.

There are several reasons.
- they may be unsure whether or not they want to do med but have a great fascination with the health sciences.
- they may be more interested in doing dent, optom or physio.
- their final goal might be heavily research oriented
- they like the facilities/campus more at Melbourne / Monash is very hard to get to (I know some who have to drive 3hours + and couldn't afford to live closer if they went to Monash)

Also, I think you vastly overestimate the number of biomed students who rejected Monash offers for Melbourne. There are a lot fewer than you think.

is MD actually a better course than MBBS?

For that sheet russ (CV), some people have said that MD doesn't add extra because it's talking about degrees outside of your primary one?
And that Melbourne effectively called MD MD just so it could make more money? Whearas in reality it's really an MBBS equivalent?

I don't know; I don't run the match or work in medical admin. The premise for people thinking you will get extra points is that you will have two degrees, which right now gives extra points. Things can very easily change there.

I don't think you can really say one is a better degree per se. Back before it was changed to postgrad, Melbourne was probably thought to be a better place to go, especially in terms of peripheral benefits. Both give you a good medical education though.

The shift to the model was for two reasons; better education model and money. MD is the equivalent of the MBBS, yes, nobody has ever really thought otherwise.

If i were in that position i'd take the monash med option without second thought. It is closer to you and takes less time to finish.
