Maintaining a 75% average at Melbourne uni

I am lucky enough to be tossing up between com/law at Monash where I am definetely in and a post grad JD at Melbourne uni which I am also guaranteed if I maintain an average of 75%.

I was just wondering how hard this is to maintain (75% average)  and how strict they are in terms of enforcement, ie will I lose my guarantee if I score say 72% in the first semester.

Just to let you know I will be doing commerce undergrad at Melbourne and I'm not really experienced in this area, I didn't do Eco or anything, so will that hinder my ability to score what is necessary .

It is a weighted aveeage of 75% through your entire course, so as long as your average is above 75 by the end if the course then you will be fine. My advice is try and get as high as you possibly can during 1st yr because this will be the easiest time for you at uni. Subjects get harder and harder as you progress along into later yrs and you will usually find your average will drop as you gwt to 3rd tr. you will need those high marks in 1st yr as a buffer for later yrs. If you start behind the 8 ball by doing bad in 1st yr - then you will find it incredibly tough to catch up.

75 is not a difficult mark to maintain - provided you maintain dicipline. It is very easy to get off track at uni with all the freedom you are allowed. So self restraint and control is key. To put in context the effort required to maintain a 75 average - it is similar to the amount of study involved to get an atar of 95.

Btw - dont fret about 1st yr economics; it was some of the most relaxed and bludgey period ive spent at uni. 2nd yr and 3rd yr economics....whole different ball game.

OP,

There are two separate sets of requirements.
1. Those which apply to your scholarship (eg bursaries and the like)
2. Those which apply to your JD guarantee.

I am almost certain that the GPA minimum applies to the scholarship, but not necessarily to the JD guarantee.

Please check with the university to clarify your position.

At any rate, if you were good enough to earn your guarantee and scholarship, you will be good enough to maintain it

Hey, um, since you're saying you need to maintain a weighted GPA of at least 75% to get a 'guaranteed' place in the JD after your undergrad, I'm assuming you got <99.90 for your ATAR, which means that this guaranteed place is a Full Fee Place (FFP), not a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), which means you'll have to pay much, much, much more. Also, you won't have the option of HECS-HELP since you won't have a CSP.

If you're absolutely sure you want to do law, I'd recommend you go for Monash, 'cause at Melbourne you'll have to maintain a GPA of at least 75% just so you can pay excessively to do the JD, while at Monash you can get somewhat similar qualifications at a much lower price and in a shorter period of time. Also, if you do want a CSP for the JD, you'll have to take a test called the LSAT and put in a personal statement.

I have decided to go to Monash, i talked to my careers coordinator and to unimelb and Monash just seem to be the better option
