Five subjects plus UMEP - Query
« on: December 20, 2012, 07:25:11 pm »

I'm planning to do five subjects plus uni maths next year, provided my app gets accepted. I was wondering if anyone on AN undertook the same number of subjects in Year 12. How did you manage your time? Did you have highly structured weeks? How did you balance your social life with your studies? How did you use your holidays?

Thanks!

Brightsky,

Bad news: UMEP maths is tough (or is this good news :)
Good news: it is easily manageable. You will need to work steadily throughout the year, but there is also a long break between your final VCE exam and the UMEP exam, which gives you the time you need to prepare for that increment of 5 you are destined to get.
More good news: You get a credit for Uni, equivalent to Accelerated Maths, which means you can start doing interesting maths almost straight away at Uni. UMEP maths is a complete course in Linear Algebra, 1st Year Vector Calculus, with a few other interesting bits such as Mathematical proof and Induction, Complex Numbers, Solid geometry etc

All you have to do is do every problem in every problem sheet, plus the past 4-5 years exams, and you will get a very comfortable 5.

I recommend you get your hands on the two recommended textbooks, Thomas Calculus ans Anton/Rorres for background reading.

You will be issued with a UoM student number (which you will retain when you get there the following year), a library card, and access to the student portal which in turn gives you access to many online library resources which can be of value to you for subjects such as VCE English (eg scholarly book reviews etc)

Added bonus. You get to see your UMEP result via your student portal a few days before the VCE results come out :)

I did 5 + UMEP, and I was fine. If I was fine, then you will definitely be fine :P

not to mention that MUEP/UMEP exams are a lot earlier than VCE exams. I finished MUEP japanese in early-october so it didnt interfere with my end of year exams at all.

Hmm I heard UMEP maths exams takes place after VCE exams. Can anyone confirm this, or am I misinformed?

That's true (from friends who sat them in 2011 and 2012).

Haha yeah same here, really looking forward to next year! This year, UMEP maths was run after school, so there were no clashes with the normal classes. I think UMEP History is run every week at around noon...which is very inconvenient because I don't think the school generates the timetable with uni subjects in mind.

Brightsky, I did 4 subjects + UMEP maths and I wish I did another subject. I had so many study periods so I pretty much slacked off, did no homework at home and so on... It was probably to my detriment.
It will make spesh seem like a piece of cake, and honestly (I've seen you posting around some of the maths boards) you will easily cope.
The only reason for you not to do it would be logistics i.e. getting there, finding an appropriate school centre/time slot etc.

This year the UMEP maths exams were on 23/26 November. I had a 10 day break from physics to UMEP, which in the context of an entire year doesn't seem like much, but it was so good to have that amount of time just to focus on one subject.

Also it's super interesting and FUN!

That it is.

I must ask you the question though, brightsky.
Why 5+ UMEP, rather than 4+UMEP?
Your other subjects seem logical choices, but Philosophy does not seem to be mission critical (other than insurance against a bad result in Chemistry).
But you don't get bad results :)

Thanks to all who responded! Just to clarify, I'm not thinking about dropping uni maths. My main concern is time management. I'm not a particularly organised person, so I'm just seeking tips on how best to approach school and life in general next year. haha

@argonaut - Philosophy is a subject I genuinely enjoy doing. I sometimes get the impression that that VCE philosophy is somewhat dry, but I don't really want to drop it.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated!
