IMPORTANT: Science vs Biomed

Hey guys, I achieved an ATAR of 99.45. I'm stoked with this. However, my ultimate aim is to do med. And since my UMAT is too low, I'm thinking of doing post grad med at Melbourne Uni.

However, my biggest concern is choosing the right undergrad 3 year course now to lead onto the MD.

So I've narrowed it down to Science vs Biomed, Melb or Monash. Which is the best option? Is it all just about the GPA? If so, is Science easier? Is it more flexible. What is the better choice? I don't mind either, cos ATAR doesn't matter, all I want is to do med in 3 years time, and which helps the best with that and provides and easier path into med?

Thanks heaps! :)

That's okay, start in the UoM and General Uni subforums. We've had a lot of people asking about this recently.

I'm just going to post this here for convenience.

First of all, if you want to do MD at Melbourne, you have to sit the GAMSAT, have a competitive GPA, and also pass the MMIs.

If you're 100% set on doing a health-science, do Biomed. The competitive cohort should motivate you to work harder, it'll essentially be like going to another selective-school cohort (and since you went to MHS, we can both see how that environment helped us).

If you also have other career aspirations/interests that aren't limited to health care, do Science, because it's more flexible and you may end up liking a career that's not medicine. However, if you go into Science wanting to do medicine, chances are, you'll be tailoring your course to match the Biomedicine course but you'll lack the cohort value.
