How to identify species that has been reduced and oxidised?

I have great confusion with this. Could someone please explain to me how to identify species that has been reduced and oxidised?

e.g. Ce4+(aq) + H2S(g) ----> Ce3+(aq) + S(s) + H+(aq)

e.g. MnO2(s) + H+(aq) + S(s) ----> Mn2+(aq) + H2O(l) + SO2(g)

If you're really stuck, try assigning oxidation numbers, rather than trying to work out where the electrons are going to. The rules for oxidation numbers should be in your Year 11 textbook if you've still kept it. These questions are not very difficult so it might be a good idea to revise your redox skills from Unit 2. :)

Hey ,

Thanks for asking questions! :) and also as Stick said you should look at revising your redox reaction knowledge from unit 2 and there is a chapter(chapter 5)  based on it in the heinemann book:) and also do as many questions as you can :)

Atttached is a solution, hope you can read my writing ! :)LOL

and please can you post questions on the chem 3/4 thread !
