« on: January 06, 2013, 08:11:08 pm »

Its part of my holiday homework

ɪngreɪʃieɪt
I couldn't figure out what word it's supposed to be.
Also: tsaɪtgaɪst

Do we actually need to know the IPA?

LOL holiday homework changed... there was never IPA

You don't actually need to know the IPA per se, but its highly recommended that you know for the essay section. Also, refer tightly to the Macquarie dictionary for IPA.

we had to learn the IPA in year 11 but it wasn't really used in year 12..as barcode said it can come in handy for essays.

Yeah. I got the sounds right for those two words but I didn't know how to find them in the dictionary. Trial and error?

I suppose I'll find this out eventually but how would I need to use IPA in the essay section?

I just found all the useful information in my macquarie pocket dictionary (3rd edition). Thanks for pointing that out XD

If you're giving an example for phonological variation for example in broad/general/cultivated varieties. I never used it in any of my essays in year 12 but I did in year 11. We had to write an essay about differences in American and British English. A great example was /təmɑtəʊ/ vs /təmeɪtoʊ/ :P

Our teacher told us just to memorise a few examples which we could use in our essays... I think I ended up using one speaking about ethnolects and one about the broad accent.

Correction: My dictionary did have some useful stuff in it, but it doesn't use the IPA - it has its own pronunciation guide instead.

Should I get a dictionary that uses IPA? :P
