>Dad is a driving instructor
>Never has time to go driving with me

If I somehow manage to get my P's early on in Sem 1, then I'll be looking for a cheap but decent quality car that'll get me to Clayton every day. Suggestions welcome from those who know more about cars than me (i.e. everyone)

What kinda car are you looking at?

Big, small?
Fuel economy important?
Looks? Doesn't matter?
Price?

Small, economy not vital (since small already compensates), prefer modern looking rather than sporty, price ~10K?

These would all be used.

Holden Astra
Suzuki Alto
Ford Focus
Ford Fiesta
Mazda 3
Mazda 2
Hyundai i30
Mk5 Golf (Non DSG, so Manual)

If you can stretch your budget, seriously consider a VW Polo, like I did :) They look fantastic, are very reliable as I've heard, german quality (yes they're built off shore but tolerances are great). If you can learn manual, even better.

personally I don't think money can get better.

New ones are high teens to 22ish for the higher end models.

I'll expand later :)

I actually didn't see anything (probably my filters) on carsales. But the true reason is.. I forgot.. They're reliable to ridiculousness I've heard.

Which generation civic are we talking about?

8th onwards.

How would a Golf be superior to a Civic in your opinion?

Golfs are just ultra sexy. They're a little rocket too, I love the design of them.

I've sat in a golf, and I feel that the fit and finish in the golf is far superior to the Honda. Also, I've driven a Tiguan (SUV) with the same engine as the golf and it was phenomenal. Because the engine is supercharge and turbo charged, there's always boost available to use! Really nice.

Problem is, that engine is very complicated and so it's been prone to heaps of failure. Also the reason they're dropping it for the new mk7.

Also, the DSG gearbox has had heaps of issues, also why I recommend going manual.

As an A to B car, you cannot fault the civic. No way.

If you care a little about refinement and stuff like that, definitely pay the premium for a polo/golf :)

Thanks for the responses guys, really appreciate the help :)

I've been trawling through carsales (even though I'm ages away from getting my 120 hours and money for a car - which I'll have to buy independently :-/ ), and I saw this: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/honda-civic-2009-14197202?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=2&eapi=2&__N=1246%201252%201247%201282%204294965322%204294965250%20903%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&Range=Price%3aMin%2c20000~0.5&sort=default

What do you guys think? I've driven primarily in a Toyota Corolla hatchback so far, but a sedan wouldn't too much of a jump, especially a Civic, right?

You prefer the civics to the golfs and polos? :)

They're pretty awesome, with most of these jap cars, there's always stuff you can modify, which I personally love :)

Sedans just have a larger rear overhang, won't be too hard to get used to. Parallel parking might take some time to get used to perhaps :)

My preference is based on cosmetics only though. When you come to the technical details I would have no idea why a golf is any better..

haha! If only that particular Civic would still be available by the time I get my licence... for me, the car would simply be an effective means of mobility, as I can't stand public transport  :D

I'm just worried about the prices associated with buying Japanese parts for these cars if the need arises - according to my dad it can be quite an expense
