Tutoring for the first time

Should I be giving homework on the first lesson? I don't have much resources to be giving much homework though, actually none at all other than my own notes and pile of prac exams, and I also feel like I won't know what level his at to decide on what kind of homework.

If the student also doesn't know what his weaknesses are yet (since school's barely started), should I get him ahead of the class? Or just teach him the things already covered?
