First-time Myki user

I hardly use public transport and have never used myki. After some researching, I'm getting the concession myki (health care card) and going to use myki money because I'm only going to travel 4 days x 13 weeks per semester and it will be a little cheaper.

What I'm confuse about is the touching off process. I know I have to touch on, but do I need to touch off when all my travel is going to be within zone 1? (To Melbourne Uni and back to Brunswick)

going to uni: touch on at brunswick station, touch off at melbourne central (or wherever) to get through the gates
 
tough on/off on trams if u wish (some people don't bother, it doesnt change anything)

going home: touch on at melbourne central to get through gates, travel to brunswick, touch off (or not, this doesn't matter either as you'll be charged for the full day regardless)


Also as a side note, it's good to get your myki registered online (if it isn't already when you bought it) so u can track where you've touched on and off, and it allows you to top up your myki online too which is convenient

otherwise it will charge you more because eventually the bus will venture into a zone 2, or it will think of your travel as a daily instead of 2hr

nononono. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you get charged MORE if you travel between zones (or even if the system thinks you did).

If you travel from zone 1 to 2 (or vice versa), TOUCH OFF.

If you're travelling within a zone, you don't need to.

All trams are within Zone 1. There is no need to touch off, as it will simply charge you a Zone 1 fare on a tram if you do not. The only time you do need to touch off is if you are travelling exclusively in the Zone 1+2 Overlap, in which case you should touch off to receive the cheaper Zone 2 fare (it is cheaper than Zone 1).

This is an unusual scenario though, as only small parts of three tram routes are within the overlap.

This pisses me off so much. I put $20 on my account the day before I travelled and it didn't go through,  which meant I had to put more money onto my account just so I could travel for the day. FUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

while travelling on trains, you must touch on AND off otherwise you will be charged the zone 1 and 2 fare. on trams you will not need to touch off, unless your trip is entirely within zone 2 (zone 2 only fare is cheaper than zone 1).

But that's not possible to do because isn't the entire tram network in zone 1?

So if you are travelling on a tram, just touch on and that's it.

as stated before, tram routes 75, 86 and 109 do enter the zone 1/2 overlap (http://ptv.vic.gov.au/maps-stations-stops/metropolitan-maps/metropolitan-tram-network-map/) so when your tram trip takes place entirely within the zone 1 and 2 overlap, you will get charged a cheaper fare if you touch off

And what I've realised during past few days, your balance isn't deducted when travelling only one stop..don't abuse the system...but keep it in mind if you are really stuck
