Hamids use of an extended monologue makes this story engaging but leaves the reader with many unanswered questions. Discuss.
Mohsin Hamid employs the use of an extended monologue as a way of intriguing the reader whilst also raising many unanswered questions. The novel being told as an extended monologue obviously only tells one side of a story; thus making Changezs speech intriguing to the reader as it has not been diluted by anyone elses views or point of perspective. Furthermore, this ambiguity raises the question of Ericas existence in the world, as it is never proven she existed to anyone other than Changez. The use of extended monologue also raises unanswered questions about who the American is and what he is doing in Pakistan. The text could also be seen as Anti-American and this idea could be supported by the use of the extended monologue, as it never gives America or The American a chance to voice their opinion. This line is good
Could anyone offer me any feedback on this introduction for my Text Response?
Umm don't know if you have been told to do this but you have just said the topic question in your opening line of your intro. To me and every teacher I have ever had this is a big no no.
I think you have kind of missed the point of the topic. Think of the unanswered questions from this book. first of all is changez a terriorist or just completely paranoid that The American is trying to kill him. Is the american an assain trying to kill Changez or an innocent being trapped in Changez's homeland.
The second part is that the story is engaging - why is it engaging? i would talk about the many metaphors that run throughout the book such as America/erica. also the predator/prey scenes between changez and the american. Even have one paragraph about the fact that this book may just be so engaging because for once a forgein peron is getting their say about how they see americas corruption on the rest of the world.
Not trying to be harsh but just think you are a bit of the mark.
One thing I can say with most reluctant fundamentalist questions is that there is always two parts, and both parts need to be addressed
