major dilemma
« on: March 07, 2013, 12:45:19 pm »
Hey guys,

I received an ATAR above 99 and a UMAT in the 70s. So I got rejected from most med unis and am currently enrolled at Melb Uni for Biomed. However, I have been offered a place at Bond University.

Want to clarify a few things which will help make a decision.

1. I have been guaranteed a full fee place at Melb Uni MD, costing around $200k. However, its a bit iffy as I have to maintain a GPA minimum of 75%, so most likely someone around 80-85%. The whole course will be 7 years. If I sit the GAMSAT and pass the interview, I can get a CSP Spot, but its not guaranteed.

2. Bond is a 4.5 year course, so I finish when Monash Med finishes (2017). IT costs $300k i think, but like 2 years more to work. And Bond is at the Gold Coast btw.

So... what should I do? Keep at it with Biomed and then go onto MD? Or go Bond? My main concerns are about getting internships back in Melbourne. And whether studying at Bond is in anyway a disadvantage when getting jobs? (i.e. will people not rate my MBBS as highly? will i be able to get into big hospitals in Melbourne? Is there solid evidence for this?)

All help is much, much appreciated.

Thanks :)

If you have to maintain a 75% average...that's the average, you don't need to get 80-85% to meet that, you can get 75% flat

If you go to Bond, you won't be coming back to Vic when you graduate. At the least you'll be doing your internship there and likely a fair bit of the other training as well (this isn't necessarily bad, you'll have been there for 4 years already)

Thanks

But nah, thats a Minimum. They are quite devious. Cos they only have like 50 spots for full fee, but like 100 ppl meet the requirement. So they rank based on GPA. So its not fully guaranteed.

And yeah, with Bon,d, thats the problem. I want to be back in Melb.

Anyone else with advice? thanks :)

Just wondering but have you consulted your family about this?

$200,000 to $300,000 is a big commitment to make and with a FFP, you aren't exactly guaranteed an internship either...

From the tone of what youve written it sounds like you prefer bond.. Stop questioning yourself and follow your heart!

If you maintain an average of 75%, you will get an MD FFP place. Guaranteed. There is no chance in hell that there are 100 people in the Biomed degree that can afford 200k for the FFP, also, something like 150 of the biomeddies get into a CSP place anyway. I'd assume a lot of those people had that guarantee. Lastly, a lot of people genuinely don't want to do med at the end of their biomed degree. I think only around 60% actually make an application to do med of the Biomed cohort, although I'd estimate 95% of the cohort go into the degree thinking they want to do med.

I'm pretty sure it does, I read it somewhere on some report by the AMC.
