Should i switch maths units?

Currently I'm doing MTH1035 and thinking I should change to 1020 as I am kinda struggling with some of the concepts right now! Although I did score a 40 in spesh, I am worried that I won't be able to actually keep up with the subject and end up failing! Do you guys have any suggestions? I do enjoy it but I can't really wrap my head around some of these concepts!

Why not do MTH1030?

From anecdotes, it really is just a 'step up' from Specialist Maths. The pre-requisites for MTH1030 is just a B Average in Spesh and judging from your SS, you have that under your belt.

:)
Finished VCE.

If you would like help in getting English Essays corrected, just pm me.

1030 and 1035 have the same lecturer but in the tutorials I pretty much sit there staring at the question hand out with no idea how to do it. While everyone around me does it like its second nature. :(

Do MTH1030 if you can't take on MTH1035, the workshop stuff might be too fancy
Don't go back to MTH1020.

Hi appledesu,

I think the advice being given to do MTH1030, instead of MTH1035 is a good one, if you're really having a lot of trouble with the MTH1035 workshops. Nobody really makes a big fuss if you 'drop out' (by the end of the 2nd week when I did it, quite a few people had left). Practically none of us doing MTH1035 really understood what was going on (definitely in the first two weeks, at least). Really.

However, judging from your use of the word "tutorial", I'm wondering if you mean the hour in which you solve questions from the back of the (MTH1030) lecture notes. In this case, if you go back to MTH1030, you'll get two hours a week (as opposed to one) to have a go at these questions and ask your demonstrator how to go about them. I think you should stick it out with MTH1030 a bit more, even if you're finding the content a bit hard. I'm probably a bit biased here, but in my opinion, MTH1030 is the most well-taught out of the main first-year science maths units at Monash. There is the Maths Learning Centre if you want some help, and some of us here have done MTH1030 too, if you're looking for additional assistance.

Whatever your choice, I wish you all the best in your studies at Monash (dear me, I'm starting to sound like the Dean or something)!

Thanks for the input guys! I've decided to stick it out in 1035, although its gonna be tough, I think I may be able to do not too badly if I gave it some extra time! (Been spending way too much time on Biology and Chemistry!)
