Life of Galileo question

Was just wondering about the structure of this novel. There's a 22-page introduction, followed by the actual play which goes for 113 pages, followed by "Texts by Brecht" for about 40, another 40 pages of editorial notes and then finishing off with a translated version of the play. My first question is should we read the whole thing? It just seems so segmented and weird. Second, how are we going to likely end up analysing this book, its structure is confusing and there seems to be more about background and sidenotes than the actual text itself. Really strange.

Um, well at my school we haven't gotten onto this yet, but I think just read the play first, and if you get bored, read the abridged version, then go back to the actual one, then the notes etc.
We aren't analysing the book, just the main ideas/themes etc.
Yes, it is strange, but I think LOG is quite straightforward in comparison with other conflict texts.
