Hey guys
So I'm having trouble grasping the intended effect of the author on the audience for LA.
Any pointers?
(I know I should read the article and consciously think "how do I feel" but this is't working!)

Never think about how you feel. I think that has to be one of the worst ways to gauge the intended effect. Otherwise you'd spend a whole essay saying "The article is intended to be boring as fuck and has no persuasive measure."
On a basic level, just think cause and effect. What is the effect of inclusive language? "This targets people's fear of isolation and encourages them to shift toward the author's contention so they can gain a sense of togetherness with every other idiot reading Andrew Bolt"
You can pretty much remember the 'effects' of a whole bunch of techniques - but this is going to score you very low marks unless you're very, very crafty.
Otherwise, start employing your sense of empathy (hopefully you have one
) -> Think 'how
could the target audience feel?'
Obviously in an asylum seekers "stop the boats!" article, smart people are going to be like "lol" and xenophobic people are going to be very receptive to "They're destroying our culture! They're destroying our economy! They're destroying our lives" because the exclusive language mixes with the fear mongering etc etc.
