Unit 3/4 - Keep going or drop it?

G'day everyone!

Alright, so we've done 2 out of 3 SAC's this year on Unit 3 (17/30 for both), on the topics relating to Biochemistry, molecules, cells etc. all that jazz. We've transitioned to a newer set of topics which includes immune, diseases, coordination and regulation... And looking at the topics studied later on, which includes Genes, chromosomes etc. its something that I enjoy. Essentially, honestly, I did Biology to avoid Chemistry, and Unit 3 kicked off with the Biochemistry aspect, and now we've started the topics I find more interesting and think I might do well at.

Our upcoming SAC is on Photosynthesis - respiration, krebs cycle and all, and think I'll achieve another 17/30 haha. So what are your thoughts? Should I wait for a few more SACs on the topics I enjoy to see how I go, or is it harder than I think it will be? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated :)

Personally I find it much easier to study and improve in a subject if I enjoy the content! And considering the fact that you have already expressed confidence/enthusiasm in the topics to come, I would keep at it :) Immerse yourself in unit 4, and I'm sure you will come out on top.

Keep going!

  • Biology is easily the best VCE course offered.
  • If you think you're going to enjoy the non-biochem stuff, good! There's so much great content in the course that I'm sure you'll enjoy most of it.

I am really enjoying Unit 3 Biology. I think I love the transition from the molecular and cellular level looking at biomacromolecules, cells structures, how cells obtain important materials, what they do with these materials to survive. Then that transitions into the homeostasis topic where we look at how these cells work together to maintain homeostasis that ultimately allows organisms to survive and function effectively. Immunity then looks at how there are pathogenic agents that can potentially disrupt the normal functioning of living organisms and how this system then destroys these foreign particles by different immune means.

Is Unit 4 Biology easier/harder/moderate compared to Unit 3 Bio?? I really find Unit 4 topics interesting; genetics, monohybrid/dihybrid crossing, protein synthesis at the DNA/RNA level and looking at replication of cells. EVOLUTION IS SO INTERESTING. I love Hominid evolution. Just wondering how difficult Unit 4 is compared to Unit 3, which isn't too bad :)

Just want to ask a small question: what would you do if you drop biology? I don't think it is possible for you to do a new 6th subject so if I were you I would continue doing biology (If you get 20 scaled score for biology and if that's your 6th subject, you get 2 points, which may bring a difference to your ATAR.)
