Respect?

Hey guys, I know that you can get positive/negative votes on your posts, but I was just wondering, how does the system work?

Is there a ratio between the respect value and number of positive votes?

Also, I know that the respect value doesn't really mean too much but it kind of irks me how mine used to be positive and now it's negative.

I don't remember posting anything that was 'really bad' but is there a way to check what happened?

You do realize that in order for us to get ATARs of 80-90+, there has to be people at the other end of the spectrum right?

if you go on your profile, and click on show posts, and keep scrolling, you will eventually see one or multiple that have down-voting on them, hence your current negative respect

Err... for those who aren't mathematically inclined:

A post must be upvoted or downvoted to the point where it is ±3 before it will have any affect on your respect. Two upvotes or two downvotes do nothing. To take the explanation further, if you make a really controversial post that receives four upvotes and six downvotes, it won't have an affect on your respect either, because your running tally for that post will only be -2, and doesn't cross the relevant threshold of ±3.

For every upvote or downvote including and beyond the ±3, this will equate to ±0.4 respect.

Post things against VCE physics and post GAT jokes is how to get respect.

Pro Tip: If you've already been permabanned under a different account, don't draw attention to yourself by questioning your negative respect.

It's also inadvisable to list the exact same subjects in both of your signatures:

I just want to reiterate that we take any trolling on the anonymous boards very seriously. As I'm sure most people will have noticed by now, sometimes people who use this board are in a very fragile state of mind and use it to reach out for help. We value the health and safety of our members above all else, and hurtful comments on that board have the potential to affect lives. It is for this reason that we will be completely unforgiving of any and all misconduct on that board.

I hope the AN community can appreciate the reasons behind administration's stance on this.
