Which stethoscope to buy??

Hi, so I'm studying MBBS and I'm in first year. I'm looking to buy the Littmann Stethoscope Classic IISE and was just wondering how long will I expect to use it for? Like, will I use it till internship years?

Is this the right stethoscope to go with or what other models are good/recommended?

Thanks!

Where are you at? :)

I have the Littmann Stethoscope Classic IISE (I got the Black Edition solely because it looks cool haha). From what I hear it's pretty decent for students and is all you'll need. You'll be using it heaps btw.

Some guys get a Cardio III, but it's pretty costly and I think the general consensus is that it's a bit over-the-top for a medical student.

btw if you are at Monash, you should have taken advantage of the discounted MUMUS sale :P

Yeh, I'd go for the Classic IISE. It's cheapish and it's all you'll need for many years (possibly beyond intern years) as long as you don't lose it. You'd really only need a better one if you're going into physicians training or something like that.

And in terms of med school itself, it's probably better. Using the Classic will help you get used to flipping your steth for the bell/diaphragm appropriately, which is important for getting marks in your OSCEs since it's fairly obvious when you flip it. I've lost marks in OSCEs and such before because I apparently didn't switch to the bell for certain areas. In fact I did, but I just brought my Cardio in and it has them both on the same side and is changed by pushing harder instead, but the examiner clearly didn't know this.

Until you actually start needing the more advanced designs that cost All The Money, the difference between the basic stethoscopes is basically nonexistent, so just get the cheapest one available.
