GAT?
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:11:02 pm »

Haha guys, GAT is next Wednesday.

I've had a look at the practice GAT and I am confused with the writing pieces.

First Writing piece:
What are the assessors looking for? Do I have to use most/ all of the information?
Will I get penalised if I don't use enough.
What format is expected?

Second Writing piece:
My teacher say it is a "standard" analytical/ persuasive response.
Yet I've heard people say you can write a creative piece/ story.
What are they assessors looking for?

Is it worth doing a practice GAT? Is it hard?
What happens I get a shocking score? Will it bring down my study score?
Other than providing a backup if you don't do you need a derived score, is there anything else the GAT does?

If I  really good in the Math/ Science sections, but bad on the writing sections ... will it matter? Since my 3/4 this year is only methods?

Thanks :D

Of course, the GAT is the most important part of VCE (if not, life).

Yeah look, I'll give you a serious response now

What are the assessors looking for? Do I have to use most/ all of the information?
Will I get penalised if I don't use enough.
What format is expected?

No-one is 100% sure here. Use as much as you feel is needed to convey the message. No specific format, be creative but not stupid.

From VCAA:
Quote
Students’ writing will be judged on:
- how well they organise and present their understanding of the material
- how effectively they communicate the information
- how clearly they express themselves

Second Writing piece:
My teacher say it is a "standard" analytical/ persuasive response.
Yet I've heard people say you can write a creative piece/ story.
What are they assessors looking for?

The instructions on the GAT will tell you what it should be ;) Basically just present your point of view, so I'd hit up the persuasive avenue.

From VCAA:
Quote
Students’ writing will be judged on:
- the extent to which they develop their point of view in a reasonable and convincing way
- how effectively they express themselves

Is it worth doing a practice GAT?

No.

Is it hard?

It's hard in the sense that you're not sure if you're doing it right for most of the test.

What happens I get a shocking score? Will it bring down my study score?

Nope.

Other than providing a backup if you don't do you need a derived score, is there anything else the GAT does?

Yeah does a few other things. Helps in scaling of SACs (using the cohort GAT) and some unis use it for middle-band selection into their courses (Monash does).

If I  really good in the Math/ Science sections, but bad on the writing sections ... will it matter? Since my 3/4 this year is only methods?

Not really.

Yeah you'll thank MHS for that when your SACs scale up heaps.

Not sure why you're stressed though...

Lol that was sarcasm. A bit off topic but is there a difference between a scaled a+ and a raw a+ if rankings weren't taken into account.

Yeah hugely important to do well in the GAT. I mean, in 2011, I scored 35 in Legal Studies, and I scored <20 on all areas of the GAT. In 2012, I managed a 90+ ATAR and my GAT scores were really high. I guess what I'm trying to say is: everything comes down to the GAT.
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️

For Writing Task 1, you need to include most, if not all of the Information provided. However, don't just go around the Page and write what it says. When you are describing the Information provided, it must be explained and should flow from detail to detail.

I did the GAT last year (As I did Further Maths), and I found it quite tricky. A lot of people say it is challenging, but I found it hard. May be because it was my first time? Who knows. ;)

My English Teacher is a GAT Assessor for the English Writing Tasks. If you need more details or questions about the Writing Tasks, let me know via PM or on here. When I see her on Monday during Class, I'll ask her the required Questions and put the answers up to them on here on Monday Night.
