Internal transfer clarification?
« on: June 17, 2013, 10:11:39 pm »

Hey everyone,
so I am currently doing Comm/Eng at Monash, I am loving engineering but I don't like commerce. I have never been interested in it and the subjects I did in VCE were science based, however I wanted to see what it is like for a semester.
I want to apply for a mid-semester transfer so I can drop commerce and go into science, but KEEP engineering. This may seem obvious/stupid, but is this possible? if so how can I ensure that the people who deal with internal transfers don't get the idea that I want to drop a double degree to go into a single?
I have the ATAR requirement to get into Sci/Eng and I don't think they look at my grades (unless I was at another uni).

I only have until the 21st to submit an internal transfer application so any sort of help ASAP will be appreciated.
Thank you :)

You go the Science information counter and tell them that you want to change into Eng/Sci and they should help you out.

No actually, I'm thinking you find the course page online for Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science, find out who the host/main faculty is, meaning who the faculty in charge of such a course is and go to their help desk. Im thinking it might be Engineering. Each faculty deals with its own course transfers and you would have to specify on the form that you would fill out what course you want to change to

EDIT:Sigh, here it is

http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/course/0085/

Says faculty is Engineering, so thats where you would go to, tell them you want to change from Comm/Eng to Sci/Eng. Fill out the forms. Hand in.

The Faculty of Engineering doesn't allow students to transfer into double degrees mid-year, from what I understand.

However, just in case, your best bet is to go the faculty office in building 72 and ask one of the ladies in there what your options are.

As for your concern about them misinterpreting your application; the documentation is quite clear. You write down what course you're currently enrolled in (Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Commerce) then what course you want to transfer into (Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science) among other things.

Additionally, I thought the cutoff for transfer applications was last Friday, 14th of June? http://www.monash.edu.au/connect/forms.html (Transfer Course)

Yeah what Pee said :)

It doesnt really matter if you cant transfer for next Sem, Just drop all the Comm units and do all Eng ones, is what I would do. If you can? And do one science unit as an 'elective' for the time being

This is want I've done in the interim between my transfer, which could occur at the end of the year or mid-year, but is totally irrelevant because I was sneaky and picked up a Sci subject for Sem 1 and 2.

Thanks for your help guys! I'll try doing a science elective :P

I've heard many people transfer from single Eng degrees to Com/Eng, how come they won't let people from double degrees with eng  to transfer to other double degrees with eng?

I assume that they will, you just can't do it mid year. (just like you can't do eng -> com/eng mid year)

I could be wrong but when I went to the faculty a little over a week ago and inquired about eng -> eng/sci the person said that the faculty doesn't allow mid year transfers into double degrees.

As for the dates in your previous post, I'm not sure which is correct, heading into uni or emailing the faculty is your best bet there.

Waaaaait a minute Phy... When I asked my Science helper lady to move into Arts/Sci, she gave me a form and I filled it out, and she said they don't always accept mid-year transfers but it's possible, and so I filled the form and gave it to the fine lady? I'm not sure if Arts/Ed -> Arts/Sci makes a difference but... I'm still moving into a double degree?

:P

Just eng, dunno about other faculties.

Originally I went to the sci faculty inquiring about what units and such I would have to do and she told me she didn't think the engineering faculty allowed mid year transfers to double degrees so I went there and asked and they confirmed that they didn't.

What I recommend  is that you should complete your first year with commerce..Then get transferred to eng/sci next year. You're doing chem or physics right? You may follow one of the pathways from that point onward

But wouldnt you say its kinda pointless doing 4 units or so when its not even for the course you want to do and dont really like it? You'd pretty much lose half a year or so of your degree if you kept going knowing that you wanted to transfer out of it, but if you pick up more Eng units that you were going to do anyway you wouldnt lose much time, and the same if you picked one Sci unit, even just to try it out and see what your options are like

I am honestly not sure :\ Currently, I am deciding from chemical, electrical or civil, all these fields I do find interesting, it's just a matter of where most of the jobs are based. I don't want to be working in a rural area! :P
How is civil? Where are most of the jobs located?

Also:
I went to the engineering faculty the other day, and the office lady was cold, the conversation went like this:
Me: Hi, I am currently doing Com/Eng and I wanted to transfer into Sci/Eng
Office Lady: Can't do mid year transfers for double degrees
Me: What if I select a sci-
Office Lady: No what ifs. We can't do anything.
