You still haven't had your orals yet?  ???

I did mine on Gambling in Australia. I really liked the idea, mainly because I was genuinely interested in it. Some other good ideas are: Sport on free TV, Pushing P plates to a later age and ratings on video games/tv shows

^ How long does your oral presentation have to be?

I'm just thinking that one article isn't enough - you're going to need a few more sources to dip in and out of when you're talking about assault weapons. I'm sure you know this, but anyhow, thought I might stress it.

In year 11 does it have to be an Australian issue or atleast in the aus media? If so make sure that banning assault weapons is related to aus. I think it's more of an American thing... Since there's already a ban on assault weapons here.

5-7 minutes .. what do u mean by more articles? i thought it's finding one topic then state the reasons why i agree or disagree?

Yeah that's what you have to do, but to make it a good and convincing oral presentation, you're going to have to show that you've done meticulous research. One way of demonstrating this is by being eclectic. For example, you can refer to a documentary from National Geographic that shaped your opinion on assault weapons. You can then say how this point of view may be counteracted if drawing from an article in the The Age written by Susan Greene (naturally you would go on to repudiate this opposing idea).

That's right. But remember to reject the opposing view in favour of your standpoint. Just to clarify, you need to find articles both for and against your view to underscore rigid research on the topic.

I did my oral (year 11 also) a month and a bit ago on "Should drugs in sport be allowed". It was 1 out of a pre-selected 6 topics that I chose.
I believe a few others there were:
  • Banning energy drinks in Australia
  • Should gay marriage be legalised

I can't recall the rest of them right now but hopefully this helps you out with an idea.
