I'm doing I.T apps, and I'll explain it to you from my experiences so far:
Overall I.T is a good subject. Databases were okay but challenging, creating a website was easy and fun, spreadsheets are not bad but the case studies kill me. Sometimes they are hard to solve.. and the other outcome is just theory, which shouldn't be too bad.

So overall I think the practical work is enjoyable and sometimes challenging, plus you can sort of bludge in class ;D. I'd say it's a medium difficulty subject.

Just make sure you're good with computers before doing units 3/4.

IT Apps is definitely a subject which you can gain a decent score in if you put the hard yards in.

As mentioned above, there is a practical side and a theory side. Before you enter IT Apps I would recommend learning a bit about Spreadsheets and Databases.

Last year's IT Apps exam (you can check this on the VCAA website) had a fair few questions relating to website conventions, normalisation and database/spreadsheet type questions (ie. what is the formula/query for this...)

So overall, I wouldn't say its too difficult but I would recommend doing some prior practice on the above mentioned before entering, especially if you haven't had much experience with using Excel/MS Access (or equivalent programs that perform similar capabilities)

Hi,

I would say that I.T Applications has a lot of content to learn and actually understand. It is not only about learning the concepts, for example the theories to normalisation and privacy laws, it's actually about being able to apply this knowledge in unfamiliar situations. Take last year's exam for an example, the normalisation question for six marks required you have an understanding on how to apply the three stages into a brand new scenario. Other similar questions included the very last nine mark question on the exam which required you to apply your knowledge of databases and spreadsheets to a company and help them create a system.

I.T Applications has a good balance between practical work and theory work, however towards the exams I'd say it's better to focus on theory and play around with databases to see how you could tackle the nine mark question, e.g. by learning how to set date parameters and setting up one-to-many relationships.

In my personal opinion, I would say this is an interesting subject and something completely different from my other subjects but I'd say that you have to put in a lot of effort for this subject and you have to be willing to learn the finest details. You also have to stay motivated and continually revise due to the sheer content embedded within the course.

tl;dr, I.T Apps is only as hard as you make it to be.

I hope that helped.

You've been asking a lot of "is x subject hard" questions lately. I reckon the gist of what's been said above applies to all VCE subjects. They all require a fair amount of careful attention to do well on sacs and exams, I wouldn't expect any VCE course to be 'easy', in that they probably will consume a lot of time (whether you choose to cram all that time right before exam period, or work consistently throughout the year). If you're choosing what subjects to do, just go by what sounds the most fun and interesting (and also prerequisites for what course you want to do).

IT Apps isn't too challenging providing you pay attention in class. The theory is far more important since hardly any of the practical material is on the exam. Too many students spend all their time mastering every function of HTML/Access/Excel and ultimately it's a "waste of time" in the VCE context.

I know several students with no IT background who went well in Apps. They were less concerned with mastering the software applications and more focused on the actual theory :)

I think an IT background is more appropriate if you're interested in the other IT subject in VCE: Software Development. Now this is a subject where ideally you have done some programming before and are familiar with networking concepts.

It all varies on your interest in computers, if you lack motivation because you have no interest then it will be hard but if your keen on learning then it shouldn't be too difficult and also it's enjoyable especially the practical work. I have to admit that some theory is quite boring but other than that it's not that difficult.

Hi, I was wondering what kind of SAC/EXAM average you would need to get a 50 in Information Technology Apps. Im doing Information Technology 1&2 at the moment and I have a SAC average of 97% (consisting of: Excel Case Study - 100% and Networks Theory SAC - 94%). All I missed in Networks was to draw a modem on a circuit diagram and I skipped an easy question and forgot to go back (Smartphone question!). Also this is my favorite subject!

Thanks everyone!
