English language is more related to the technical analysis of English (semantics, linguistics, language constructs etc.) - essentially how the English language is used, while mainstream English more devoted to the analysis of why language is used in a given context, and how that use of language affects people.
This is not exactly the case. The main goal of English Language is to analyse the use of language in context.
The problem is that neither of us have done the other, so we can't too reliably compare! My understanding is that English involves analysing and discussing texts as texts. So by that I mean that the texts are treated as a literary work. The analysis is based on them being work of literature. It examines themes, relevance to the real world...it's about talking about the
content of the text. English language on the other hand looks at the
purpose of the text. So in terms of analysis, you're quite right in saying that English Language does go a lot more technical. It looks at the very definite linguistics. In English, you look at a literary device as a way of appealing to an audience, creating an emotion etc etc. In English Language, you'd look at the literary device in terms of the text and in terms of what the author of that text wants to achieve. Also, there's a massive part of English language (namely unit 4) devoted to the socio-cultural aspects of language, and how variation in language is reflected in Australian English.
I feel like a bastard for actually even trying to add that. It's bloody confusing to explain!
