SAC SCORES.... EASY QUESTION PLEASE ANSWER?
« on: July 30, 2013, 04:50:05 pm »

Okay, so I am in year 12 at the moment, and apparently its a 'policy' for teachers not to tell us our specific SAC scores (by specific I mean the actual numerical figure, a percentage or number out of x) for units 3 and 4. We only get the 'band' where we sit in, so like only medium, high etc... Just wondering, is this an overall VCE policy that applies to all schools in Victoria, or is it just some schools that decide that? Has it been like this always in the past?

Thanks.

Schools can do what they want with SAC marks. Some tell a grade, some tell a quartile, some tell the exact score, whatever they want.

p.s. how do I pronounce your username?

So you're saying its completely up to the school to disclose percentages and specifics for SAC's? Our school says they do this just in case the SAC scores need to be moderated after the exam?? There's no universal rule that states in the VCE authority that schools must not disclose these specifics about SAC scores?

I don't believe there is a VCE policy on this, so schools can disclose as much and as little as they want to.

Does this also apply on the disclosure of rankings? I know my school doesn't give us our ranks except for those doing spesh.

Well, my name was supposed to be Sienna, and I put in one of those characters from the character map , and didnt display, so it gave this code thing instead, but its Sienna to answer your question.

Okay, thanks , just wanted to confirm this as was not sure, and wanted to get a various input. Was under the belief there was a universal VCE ruling on this.

So personally, at your school did you personally receive when you were in year 12 doing 3 and 4, did you receive your percentages and specific mark out of x?

Do you mean how you rank in the class? My teacher told me that some teachers do class rankings, where they rank sstudents who are at the top out of that class, but that they don't disclose that to students? But I think that's probably their option??

Yeah they don't have to tell you your rankings either. Some schools have awards for rank #1 though so they'll know in those cases.

Haha no worries, welcome to ATAR Notes Sienna :)

So personally, at your school did you personally receive when you were in year 12 doing 3 and 4, did you receive your percentages and specific mark out of x?

It changed depending on the subject. For Chem/Methods/Spesh/Physics I got my raw mark (percentage and a fraction out of x) for each SAC and what grade (eg. A+/A/B+/etc.) that was, for English I only got a grade and raw marks were hidden.

Do you mean how you rank in the class? My teacher told me that some teachers do class rankings, where they rank sstudents who are at the top out of that class, but that they don't disclose that to students? But I think that's probably their option??

Yep their opinion. But EVERY teacher MUST rank their students, they just may or may not tell you what the rankings are.

Alright thankyou π !! Now I'm not sure if you would know this, but do you have any idea at your school for other subjects apart from the maths/science ones? So like for commerce subjects like accounting, did they get their raw score also for their SAC's? Do you know why they didn't give you your raw score in English (is it for the reason that it could be subject to moderation??) Just a few things I'm wondering about, because I wasn't sure if it was only specific schools or what, so I just wanted to get other people's perspective.

Wouldn't have a clue other that you get raw marks in Economics and Biology too.

For Enlgish I think they did it because they cross-marked every SAC and did other moderation. But I'm not totally sure.

It's up to individual schools to decide how they report marks to students. I'm doing economics 3/4 and the marks are just reported as raw marks for example if you got 59/60, the mark reported to me as just that.

IMO knowing raw marks is best as you can see exactly how examiners distribute marks across questions and therefore know what does or doesn't need to be included in answers.

Teachers can disclose whatever they want. My business teacher gives us a percentage and a rating VH H M L VL. She doesn't give us our actual mark, but I can work it out with the percentage.
