Professional Accountancy - RMIT - Work Placement?

Hey guys,

Considering putting down the Bachelor of Business (Professional Accountancy) Degree down as my 1st preference, although had a query in regards to the work placement in the 3rd year.

It says: The third year involves a compulsory work-integrated learning (WIL) component in the form of a cooperative education placement.

In terms of this, what sort of firm would a student get placement in? Would it be just a regular accounting firm in some suburb where you learn nothing and are given menial tasks, or will it be a proper accounting firm, something like PwC and the likes where you'll gain actual experience as an accountant?

Any thoughts or advice would be great :)

It is up to you to secure work placement. Therefore, how well you do at uni dictates where you may be able to a placement opening. Several friends I know who did quit well during their studies were able to secure placements at several big firms (incl the big 4). However, there are some who coasted through who had trouble finding openings.

If the Bachelor of Business (Professional Accountancy) degree requires you to find your own work placement, you might as well consider doing any other commerce or business course. As sluu001 said, there are no guarantees of securing work with a firm, which is dependent on your marks. You should also look into the various cadet/trainee programs offered by the big 4, if you're in Year 12/first year of university.

Exactly... even if there isn't an allowance for 'work integrated learning' in your degree, you can always apply (and should apply) for vacation programs, summer sessions, short term internships or a suitable part-time job? Don't rely on the course structure to get you through - being able to get a good job after uni is heavily dependant on how career-driven you are during your studies.
