We studied Skin and a lot of people in our year level didn't connect with it very well. I don't think its a bad movie, probably just not the best choice for a context resource. I can think of many better movies to study, but i digress.
Our essay topic was focused on how parents make up part of your identity, and worded loosely around the quote form the movie 'they are a part of who your are'.
Some things i found helpful:
Law of the Jungle by Rudyard Kipling
"As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk, the law runneth forward and back;
For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack."
The second line is good, becausee it addresses two aspects of the context: How we develop identity as a part of a group, and on our own
No Man Is An Island by John Donne
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
The fundamental concept with skin is how Sandra develops identity as a part of different groups. Her belonging is rooted with her parents, but she also lives an existence separate form them. Everything relates back to her being with or apart from the group, so try and take the crux of these exterior texts and use them to explain this concept.
Hopefully this helps
