Which subject should I choose?

Hi everyone! I'm currently in year 10, and I've just got back my subjects for next year that we have one week to change if I want to. I'm not sure whether to do Biology 1/2 or Legal Studies 1/2. I'm doing Biology this semester and I'm LOVING IT, but I HATE dissection and stuff like that, and I'm not sure if that happens in year 11 - it doesn't in year 10.

My current subjects are:
• English Language 1/2
• Religion & Society 1/2
• General Mathematics 1/2
• Music Performance 1/2
• Psychology 1/2
• Legal Studies 1/2

I've also been told that Biology and Psychology are quite similar in areas and it helps in one subject if you're doing the other.

I'm not the type of person who is totally interested in legal stuff, but the main thing I'm worried about in biology is dissection. And what would give me better marks? I'd be pretty average in both of them.

Thanks! :)

Based on my school, the only dissection involved in all 4 units of Biology was a rat dissection in Unit 1 and even then you can opt to not do it and do a modified SAC instead. It's not that big of a deal so I think you should pursue with Biology :)

btw Thread should be in Vic Education Discussion i think :D

Yes, Biology does help learn content in Psychology - but only in 3/4 Psych when you do the Neural Basis of Learning and Neuron Development, etc. Biology is not needed for 1/2.

Personally, I'd go with Legal Studies. :)

If you enjoy Bio, definitely go with Bio (assuming no one rocks up ITT and says Units3/4 could have compulsory dissection)
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️

I just checked the bio study design, only units 1/2 had any outcomes involving dissection

I actually do all three of bio, psych and legal
I think you should do bio, especially cause you love it! The legal studies course is actually quite dry - unless you love it i wouldn't do it. For both psych and legal the 1/2s are much better and more interesting than the 3/4. You can always change after you do yr 11 depending on what you decide you like.

feel free to ask any more questions about any of the subjects :)
2012: Theatre studies 41
2013: English 38| Methods 31 | Biology 37 | Legal studies 43 | Psychology 44 |

Since you said you love bio then do it! Why would you do legal if you don't like it? Bio and psych is not really similar.. Bio is alot of memorising the content then applying the theory to questions. Psych is so interesting! I quite like it, but it depends on the individual. That said, don't be too fussed because like others said, you can change before year 12. Especially subjects like psych and legal, apparently, you can certainly pick those subjects up in 3/4 without 1/2. i've done only 1 dissection in bio, that was a kidney, it wasn't messy at all. In PE, there were messy dissections like heart, long bone etc.

Psych is easy to pick-up, but Research Methods is a HUGE loss by not doing 1/2. You are supposed to do at least 2 ERA's in 1/2, and then 1 ERA in 3/4. It actually counts as 50% of your Unit 3 mark, which is pretty big.

My psych teacher said it's easy to pick up not me haha. Yeah, ERAs are big. I did one in unit 2. Research methods is the most boring part of psych i can say. Theres a guideline provided in my school as to how to write one and we can bring it in as well, not sure about others though...

Do bio, if dissections are your only problem with bio than that is no reason not to do the subject. Schools have to offer alternatives to dissection, if they forced students to dissect animals against their will in order to pass a subject that would be highly unethical.

You say you aren't "totally interested in legal stuff" while at the same time you are "LOVING" biology so you have pretty much answered your own questions as to what subject you should do.
