Hey guys
So Im doing a creative for Section B (Context is Identity and Belonging, book is Growing up Asian....)
As such, Im gonna do a short story tomorrow similar to a short story in the anthology.
Im probably just gonna memorize my piece and try to mold it to the prompt provided
However, do you think its good to have a weak link to the prompt but beast as writing, or a strong link to the prompt and mediocre writing? I'm just scared that my link to the prompt will be fairly implicit

Also, are we allowed to bring in a digital watch tomorrow?

Cheers, and best of luck to everyone =D

I'd advise that it's best to go for a strong link to the prompt; you will lose serious marks if your piece doesn't relate to the prompt, even if it's a magnificent work on its own.

The beauty of having a good Context piece is its adaptability - if you have a solid idea, you should be able to tweak it to suit the prompt. Get creative, and it'll be pretty easy!

Thanks for the speedy reply! Don't know if I should feel relieved or extra nervous ahaha. Hoping the prompts tomorrow are decent and not too out there...
Also, anyone have a word on the use of watches yet?

Oops, didn't read the watches part! Often what happens is that the supervisors will tell you what to do with things like watches. If you're not allowed them on your desk (and you're almost certainly not going to be allowed them on the desk), you may need to either give them to the supervisor to hold on to until the end of the exam, or place them underneath your desk.

Oh.. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of bringing a watch? I wanted to time myself so I didn't go overboard for each essay.
I was under the assumption that watches (any kind) were allowed in the exam as long as we left it on the table?

That hasn't been my experience. Hopefully your exam hall should have at least one clock on the wall though. That'll serve the same purpose as having a watch.

VCAA is very paranoid about students finding 'creative' ways to cheat, so they go overboard (in my opinion) with some of their regulations - like only allowing clear water bottles.

Just make sure you tweak your piece to the prompt you are given. It doesn't require a lot of changes, but just some of the words in your key topic sentences. :)

For watches, you are allowed to have them but they must be placed on your table. :)

Just did a quick Google, looks like this is right - but the supervisors can still confiscate them for the duration of the exam if they deem it necessary:

Quote
WATCHES
You will not be permitted to wear watches of any type during an examination. All watches must be removed and placed at the top of your table, where they can be seen clearly and easily by supervisors.

If there is any doubt about the functions of your watch, supervisors are authorised to direct you to remove the watch from the table for the duration of the examination.

Stopwatches or watches with special functions, such as an alarm or stopwatch, are not permitted in the examination room.

(from here.)
