Bound reference question!!!
« on: November 03, 2013, 09:39:43 pm »

I've made a summary of my notes throughout the year in an exercise book but there weren't enough pages for everything so I've started a new book.

Now that I have two books, will the examiners allow me to bring in the two exercise books duct taped together? Or will I have to remove the exercise book coverings and get all the pages to staple together then duct tape it into one spine?

I didn't see anything that VCAA mentioned about having two books duct taped together but I'm unsure about what to do...

You can duct tape them together as long as they look like they have one spine on the outside!

I've done exactly what you've done for spesh, I haven't gotten many notes for methods so I'm just duct taping my notes and a few questions from past exams together :)

Will it be okay even though my books have different coverings because that won't make my bound reference seem like one book? I'm just worried that the examiners won't except two books in one.

If you're really worried, you could get it properly bound at Officeworks?

Sometimes your school office or library may even do it for an even cheaper price? May be ask them?

I've thought about going to Officeworks but I'm pretty cheap. After reading that ex-students have duct taped their spines to make their bound book I thought of going with that method.

My school doesn't do bounding. I'll probably just go with BasicAcid's tips and hope for the best!

I'm not sure if you have access to this and it also depends on how thick the two books are combined, but you could get one of those MASSIVE Staplers to combine the two books together. :) I think Officeworks does it for free (Might depend on the store), and your school library should have one as well.

It just depends on the school. Some supervisors are strict (They are pretty strict at my school), and others aren't. If the two books are securely taped together and can't fall apart of move around to fall out, then you should be fine. :)

Good Luck! :)

One book is a 64 paged and the other has 192 pages. The books combined aren't that thick but I think if I go around the spine with duct tape a lot of times it'd be fine.

Oh okay. Yeah, that shouldn't be a problem then. Should be fine to just use duct tape. :)

Office works does it for like $5...
Maybe even cheaper. It only takes a day or so too. Mine had two spines but I was just worried they'd take it off me so I got it bound

I cable tied mine, ask around people have spare cable ties :P

Quote from VCAA:

"
Your bound reference must not include:
• pages or parts of pages that can be detached from the
bound reference during the examination
• fold-outs, maps or brochure-style components
• removable tabs, post-it notes or other pages or material
designed to be detached
• forms of collation/binding that are designed to be
non-permanent and the content modified by insertion
including:
             – ring-binder folders
             – plastic A4 sleeves (permanent or removable) from
                which pages may be removed
             – manila and similar folders with clip, clamp, slide and
metal prong binding of loose-leaf material

I got mine done at Officeworks Werribee an it was $5.70 for about 250 pages. I had mine tied and duct taped but it looked a bit shifty with two spines so I got it done properly :)

I thought about going to Officeworks but if I can do it easily at home, why not right?

I just removed the entire covering of one of my books and gathered the pages together to staple. I then got my other book and only removed the front cover so I could place my gathered pages on top. After, I put my front cover I removed before on top of my pages so it now looks like a proper book. I then just ran duct tape over my spine a couple of times so it looks like a one spine book. It's pretty secure and looks exactly like an exercise book only with a duct taped spine and a front page which says '64 page' when it's really around 200 pages haha.

I've attached a picture of what it looks like but I really do hope that the examiners allow me to bring this. It doesn't seem to violate any of their rules.

Sorry I have a question about bound books but didn't want to start a new topic!

Are we allowed to glue stuff into the bound book? Like exam questions?
