He claims it because, in the diagram, it appears that the THICKNESS of the discs are the same.
However, I disagree. The question explicitly states that the two shapes are SIMILAR, which, by definition, means that the thickness would be variable. Also, the question did not state that the diagram was to scale.
Therefore, in my opinion, the answer should be (6/5)^3

Totally agree with you turtlekent.

The squared trick can't apply because the question states that they are similar if i remember correctly (so the dimensions differ).
Plus, if you state the linear ratio i think you get a working mark anyway (according to previous VCAA reports),
regardless of your final answer.

i thought generally 1 mark lost = 1 ss lost

losing 5 or so marks would be 44-45 wouldnt it? or is the exam difficultu influencing this, correct me if im wrong.

I've never heard of that and it doesn't sound right either.

Several other factors are influential.
