Wait, out of all the schools in Victoria, MHS doesn't offer Latin?

Wow lol my school introduces Latin in year 9, the same year kids start going to MHS
Yeah no Latin haha
Most ppl that do Latin in our school did Latin at their old school b4 going mhs.

Yeah I did Latin at UHS. Although even if it was offered at MHS, I doubt I would have taken it. Not a LOTE person.

Speaking from experience, as someone who attended at private school, I believe it doesn't really matter which one you choose. Xavier and Melbourne High rank very high in terms of academic results. If you want something to decide it for you, look at the extra-curricular opportunities that you can participate in at each school (i.e. not just your average Saturday sport). If I went through high school again, I definitely would have tried more things such as DAV debating, academic-based competitions, gone on overseas study trips etc.. I don't think you should purely base your decision off an academic standpoint, because there is so much more on offer than just "What were Xavier's VCE results compared to Melbourne High?". The school you attend, regardless if it's private, public or selective, isn't the determining factor of your ATAR score. It's you, yourself. I'm sure you'll find teachers that are hard to understand/difficult at any school, across the board.

I wouldn't "network" with most of them if you paid me.

You're throwing away value, one of the reasons to go to a private school is the connections. I'm going to the Melbourne club next month for an old boys thing (granted you can't go there, but the point holds).

They're both obviously excellent academic schools, I was just pointing out that I believe the private school network to be significantly better developed.

I do agree with Russ. Having gone to the school I went to, everything that a private school offers your can pretty much get around. Eg, the academic environment and all that shit. Obviously it's wonderful to have, but you can do without it and do just as well. Same for sports, you can do it outside of the school (assuming you have the means, which some don't). The only inescapable advantage (that I've thought of, so far) that a private school has over a public school (I mean a shitty public school, MHS may as well be private in my eyes lol) is the "connections".

Whether than be important or whatever else remains to be seen. I'd probably rather shoot myself in the face than put on a facade for the 'old boys'. But the disparity is there, nonetheless.

You've raised a great point. But MHS and Xavier both have equally good opportunities for co-curricular things. MHS has heaps of clubs, and Xavier has heaps of different, well-funded things.  :) :)

Also another note - I'm pretty sure mhs and macrob might start offering latin classes (recall reading it somewhere in the newsletter but don't quote me on that)

I'm sorry mate, but I don't know where you are hearing that MHS old boys association is 'better'?
I think MHS old boys association would be strong, but not as strong as the 'APS' schools.

Old Xavs : VAFA A Grade premiers
MHSOB : relegated from D Grade.

That's as close as MHS will ever get to Xavier :)

I am nearly convinced that Xavier are more capable of academically improving a random student, than MHS are.

But seriously (not that I think Pokemon isn't serious -it is), there are many areas, I'll name a mix of academic/social/sporting for completeness (there are more):
1) If you want nearly an entire cohort of like-minded (ie. high academic goals) people
2) If throughout schooling you've been labelled as a "nerd", you'll fit in fine as one of the jocks at MHS
3) If you've got some talent in Badminton, Chess, Debating, Table Tennis, break-dancing, waterpolo, swimming and athletics (some years) and actually want to win state titles
4) Whilst not all teachers are amazing, there are many great teachers and being in a strong cohort mean your SACs scale up heaps
5) I can't talk for Xavier, but at MHS there is a club for nearly anything: debating, anime, cadets (army + air-force), environmental, public speaking, economics, political interest, maths extension, chess, gay, scrabble, etc etc. It covers all interests and no-one is left behind
6) MHS has arguably the best Year 12 Formal in the state. I don't recall Katy Perry crashing Xavier's Formal, but I do remember some students being idiots in wheelie-bins (it's reputation isn't what it once was)
7) MHS has a brilliant music department which also gets to work with Mac.Rob, every student plays a role in this department to some degree. Part of the ethos of "more than just marks".

I could go on, and I'm sure Xavs has some great advantages too, maybe even more than MHS. Who knows, haven't been to Xavs. Just saying that it's not all a one-way street and there are positives to both schools.

Hi guys,

I actually go to Xavier (went there, finishing this year)
For me, I believe it is an excellent school.  ALL MY FRIENDS are extremely intelligent (one got 44 in latin RAW and 44 in meth last year) among other 45-50s.  Academically, we do very well.  Sure, Latin helps.  I did Latin last year and managed a 34 which scaled to 49.35- it is one of the hardest subjects to do (I'm also doing classical Greek this year)
There has been a proud tradition of teaching classics at Xavier- and for all you people out there who say its a guaranteed high score, I'd like to see you try it! there were also quite a few scores last year in the 20s and a couple from 15-20 so it's not for the faint-hearted.

Also, the teachers there are amazing.  Sure, there are some jocks but all my year 12 teachers have worked so hard for me and I cannot thank them enough.  My English teacher would call me nights before SACS, I've been to her house, I would see her during frees a few times a week etc.  The amount of work I did was ridiculous and she always managed to correct it (despite having a renaissance 3/4 class aswell and a year 11 nglish class which also require many essays)

Indeed, there is also a club for everything at Xavier.  Debating, etc etc

Now, the thing I find amusing is this, "MHS has arguably the best year 12 Formal"

Well Xavier's traditional RED and BLACK ball is held at Etihad Stadium annually and I've heard it's ranked third in the most prestigious formal events (after the Brownlow and Allan Border Medal)- not to mention how Xavier boys seem to be surprisingly surrounded by girls in the months leading to the event.

My biggest criticism however would be some of the people who go there.  That's up to you though who you befriend.  All my friends are fantastic so I haven't had any issues.  But there are some "jocks"- the only thing they do is make you laugh at assembly so don't worry to much!

Anyway, if you want to ask anything, I'm happy to answer on Xavier's behalf.  But look, MHS is a prestigious school also! I think you're in good hands wherever you decide to go!

Have we lost sight of the original topic of the thread? It was a simple, short question. OP probably has more than enough opinions/different insights. You're most likely going to get biased responses from ex-MHS/ex-Xavier students either way (as previous posts have shown). This post sums it up nicely:

No school itself will 'give you a better chance'. It really comes down to the opportunities that you have and what you make of them.
Like most schools across the state, either Xavier or MHS will prepare you for a great future no matter what you want to do in life.

Just keep in mind, at the end of the day, it's your decision, not anyone else's. Take a tour of the school during a normal day if you can. Talk to current students who go there. Go where you feel most comfortable and at ease, and where you think you'll be most prepared for Med.

I'd rather not see this thread turn in to a shitstorm over "which school is better blah blah blah", because really, we could have 20 pages and still not agree on each other's views. Each school has their individual pros and cons. Responses from an online forum is essentially just food for thought.

Yes, both MHS guys and Xavier guys have said that? We're just trying to talk about our own experiences?
