PHYS20009- Past exam answers

Thought I may share my answers for the past exam PHYS20009 sem1 2012. Let me know if you get different answers as I am unsure on a couple. Have dot pointed what I would include in SA questions. Feel free to post your answers too!

1.C
2.A
3.A
4.D
5.A
6.B
7.A
8.B
9.C
10.B
11.C
12.D
13.B
14.C
15.D
16.D
17.C
18.B
19.B
20.C

SA:
1.
-100% O2 and room air rebreathing would cause increase in ventilation rate
-increase in plasma CO2 levels to 5% would cause sig. change in ventilation rate
-ventilation rate increases due to increased plasma CO2 levels (I would explain Silverthorn fig. 18.2)
-however it is not CO2 that directly causes increase in ventilation, still being researched->metabolites??
-Room air with substance that absorbs expired CO2 does not cause increase in ventilation as plasma levels of CO2 do not significantly increase (unless the absorbing substance becomes saturated)

2.
a)That mysterious compound causes an increase in blood pressure in humans by increasing cardiac output of the heart.
b)Two underlying physiological mechanisms to discuss would be
-force of contraction->stroke volume increase
-SA node->increase firing, increase heart rate

3.
a) Use animals as the term black-market drug suggests that there has not been any clinical trials on the drug, thus its effects are unknown. Allows you to examine side effects of the drug before administering it to humans. Also, animals such as rats mature quickly allowing you to be able to see if the drug effects development and has any future effects-long lasting physiological consequences.

b) Use tissues to examine the effects of the drug on the tissue itself and use whole organism as you want to see its effect on the body (side effects) and any long lasting physiological consequences.

Haven't done q4 yet....

Yeah, I think you are right on questions 7, 9 and 11. Though I think 13 is B as it is observational hypothesis, not manipulation. I think working at a coffee plantation suggests the conditions cannot be altered whereas during exercise suggests it can be turned on and off. I think 16 is D as though B (0.05) would suggest significance, the most significant would be 0.005 as it is the lowest, thus the most significance difference. 19, I was a bit unsure about but I thought B as I think the majority of the ethics committee would be representative of the population, but I don't know??
Yes I have done sem 2 :)

1.A
2.A
3.B
4.C
5.E
6.A
7. I swear this question is wrong! I find three correct answers and one incorrect, though the question asks for one correct!
8.B
9.E
10.D
11.B
12.C
13.C
14.D
15.C
16.E
17.C
18.C
19.B (do you think it could be C?)
20. I thought that they were all correct, maybe C.

SA
Q1:
sympathetic-decrease
parasympathetic-increase
heart rate-decrease
stroke volume-decrease
cardiac output-decrease
total peripheral resistance-decrease
mean arterial pressure-decrease

Truee for Q13 and 16. For ques 19 my choices were between A and C, but yeah im not sure about that either ..

All my answers were the same except Q1 which i chose B coz in the flow chart in the notes theres a decrease in baroreceptor activity
And lol i think ques 7 is wrong too, there was more than one correct answer

btw if youve done anymore feel free to post them :)

Can someone please explain the difference between manipulation, choice and observation hypotheses?

Manipulation is when you manipulate a variable, i.e. exercise or no exercise, drug or no drug. Then you can analyze its effects.

Observational is when you are observing the organism in its environment, i.e. you cannot change it and you are just observing what happens.

Choice is when there is a preference and an organism prefers something, i.e. the example in the lab manual of adolescent humans prefer coke to pepsi.

Hope that makes sense :)

Thanks so much for that. I knew we covered it in the workshops but the difference in the hypotheses weren't in the workshop slides.
