Good tutoring places for methods 3/4
« on: November 17, 2013, 01:32:08 pm »

Hey guys
I want to find a decent place for methods 3/4 and specialist maths as well (methods top priority) with good notes and teaching method.

My aim is for a 45-50 in both.

Any recommendations?
I've already been to Dr he and I don't particularly enjoy his teaching style.

I'm also tutoring in methods (got a 50 last year) and have a good method and such because I've done tutoring in the past for methods 1/2 and 3/4 :)
I can negotiate a great price if interested!

Not recommended.

His results are exemplary, but when you look at the minimum requirements (HD in AMC, 43 raw in Methods, etc), all the students that attend are bound to do well.

In reality, I found the teachers at my school are more concise and detailed.

His notes are pretty mediocre too, although very challenging.

I suppose there is a very competitive atmosphere there though.

He gets good students.

He's 'good' because I haven't seen anywhere better yet.

Feel free to go there and see for yourself.

Derrick is amazing! I have him this year for 3/4 methods, and hopefully for Spesh next year. He's very organised, writes clear and concise notes and really friendly. I enjoy how he focuses on the understanding of concepts rather than rote-learning them. He also allocates groups based on similar student abilities.

There are a few things to consider though. He ONLY teaches on Sundays (he’s a doctor now) and from his home (Wheelers Hill). Though I’m aware he has other associates (his former students) tutoring in different locations. There are no refunds or replacement lessons if you miss one. Once you get a timeslot, you can’t change it. He only tutors groups of 5, I don’t think that’s a bad thing though. He also has quite a long waiting list (I was on it for 2 years lol) and organises enrolments before the New Year. Still worth emailing though as he's very friendly and reply promptly.

^Definitely agreed with this. The level of the students that he gets is pretty high so they are bound to do well (I mean it's like 43 RAW to do tutoring for Specialist Maths LOL) but the entrance exam can be challenging since it's more AMC questions rather than anything (well when I did it anyway but turned the offer down straight away after sitting that exam). Having said that, on the 2/2/14 (2 days ago) he just had his entrance exam for the year according to my friends so you won't be able to apply I don't think (unless people drop out that is...)

I heard the waiting list is quite long and can confirm that the test has already taken place so it's doubtful that you will get a place.
Yes, Dr He does take in good students, but he teaches well too. Sometimes his explanations are not as simple as those in day school because he has to teach a week's worth of work in one and a half hours, as well as go through the previous week's test and hold that week's test. I find his teaching style effective (although I admit I sometimes don't understand things he races through) and his homework is quite challenging, as well as his weekly tests and end of term exams. However, I can see how others may not like it and prefer to go slower and more carefully. I would recommend him as a supplement for normal day school classes where you can further expand your knowledge of previously learnt concepts and apply them to challenging questions. I know my maths improved a lot since I started going to him.

Eh, I really don't know, think the standard's dropping. I heard he took a kid from my school who is averaging Bs.

^LOL your school might have an even higher standard than Dr. He's classes ;)

Though the SD for Methods hasn't exactly changed so the content that he's been teaching should roughly be the same.. it'd be more about the people that he's accepting in imo...

Totally agree, his notes are very easy to understand and besides, studying with Derrick Ha, you never run out of homework to do!
