Memorise your Health status indicators/measures and understand what they mean. E.g. what does it mean when I say that Cardiovascular Disease is more *prevalent* in Indigenous populations? These include:
*Life Expectancy
*Health-Adjusted Life Expectancy (HALE)
*Burden of Disease and DALYs (including your fatal burden YLL and Non fatal burden YLD)
*Under-5 Mortality Rate
*Mortality
*Morbidity
*Incidence
*Prevalence

Also know definitions for Health AND Health Status! :)

To become comfortable with data analysis Qs, you should look through graphs or tables in your textbook (or on the AIHW website: e.g. http://www.aihw.gov.au/australian-trends-in-life-expectancy/ - though the tables you get in HHD Qs won't be as big as that one so don't fret! :P).

For the sake of better understanding some concepts in Unit 3 AOS 1, it might also be helpful to become familiar with particular terms that can be assessed in sacs (sacs unfortunately do not always pertain strictly to the study design as the exam does) e.g. terms like Socioeconomic Status Infant Mortality, and Food Security is a good term to know as well because you'll need it for Unit 4 too. It is also important to understand what's meant by Determinants of Health (and not confuse them with Dimensions of Health!). So perhaps define biological, behavioural and social determinants and think of examples that fall into each category :)
2011: English | Methods | Psychology | Health & Human Development | Legal Studies | Texts & Traditions
2012: B.A. (Psychology) @ UniMelb
2015-16: Master of Teaching (Secondary: Psychology/Health) @ UniMelb
2017- Teaching Psych & HHD :D

Happy to help out with; Health & HD(48), Psych(48), Qs about UniMelb Psych or MTeach courses :D

thanks a lot man, you seem like that only person who can help me in the health section, through the year if i need to bounce off ideas or need advice can i consultant you?  I know most of those terms but don't a few as their the first I'm seeing them, also have you seen the new study design?  I think my biggest issue is getting straight to the point/concise and giving examples on definitions also do i need to know anything about children or do we just focus on adulthood in units 3-4?  also i just posted a thread on how i would answer 'burden of disease if it was asked for e.g define it in my own words i would say this and would i get full marks if it was out of 2?

Burden of disease:  Is measured in disability adjusted life years(DALYs, burden of disease is used to asses and compare the condition that cause ill health and death through the help of mortality and morbidity data, did that last part make sense?

Haha that's okay! :) And nah usually during the year the HHD board is buzzing! :D But now that it's holidays it's a bit quiet hehe :) And of course! Feel free to PM me if you ever have doubts! :)

Yepp I have seen the new study design! :) They've taken a few topics out from previous years and have clarified some topics which is good for you guys doing HHD in 2014! And nope, for 3&4 HHD the concept of "Human Development" will be totally different from what you did in 1&2. You'll no longer be looking at physical/emotional/social/intellectual development across the lifespan (like you did in unit 1&2). Instead, you'll be looking at human development from a life-skills perspective and how it encourages personal, social and economic development - this will make more sense when you actually start learning about it in unit 4 :)

And your definition is partly correct but you need to mention the fact that the Burden of Disease is related to the impact of diseases and injuries; and that it is the gap between the current health status and an ideal situation where people live to old age free of disease :) It's a bit like determining *where we are now* and comparing it to *where we should be* in terms of health :)

When in doubt about a definition, just look at the study design - they have the list of definitions that VCAA wants you to know, so you can't go wrong. BUT make sure you understand them, because as much as knowing a definition is important (there's a few marks just for giving a definition in every SAC and exam), HHD is based on understanding the concepts and applying them to what they give you, whether it be a situation, some data, or a extract from an article. That's where most of the marks are :)

During the holidays, memorising and understanding the key definitions and concepts is what I would be doing. Then once the year starts, you have plenty of time to do questions and learn how to answer different types of questions the way your teacher wants. Then the forum will be active again and you'll have heaps of other past and present HHD students top help you with those questions you don't know how to approach. I found it really helpful to ask the people on here, since sometimes I would be answering a type of question in a certain way and my teacher would be giving me full marks, but here I'd see that everyone is doing it differently.

So it's good to get different perspectives, so by the end of the year, you pick and choose the elements and ideas you got from everyone to approach questions on the exam!
VCE: English, Health, Legal, Psych, Further, Chem
2015: Arts/Law @ Monash

Guys I only doubled with Arts because I couldn't let go of Psych and wanted to keep doing it as a major at least, but I took International Studies on a whim after the info session just because I needed a minor, and I love it so much! It's 3:29am and I had to share this, I think I'm majoring in it bye.
