Hey friends,
I've been looking and researching around with whatever information is available but to no avail have I concluded on the course that I want to pursue.
I've always had a liking for IT, however I do not wish to make it as one of my careers, perhaps just something as a side-job or as a hobby. In terms of what I like about in IT, at the moment I'm interested in things like ethical hacking and security, but also programming and developing software that are of use to general users. I've helped a lot of my friends with their IT related problems whenever asked, and have assembled more than a dozen systems since primary, but definitely not wanting to be a technician of some sort like that.
I also had a thought of teaching something I enjoyed at high school level, which, after learning VCE Accounting, seems to be something that I really enjoyed and wish to teach to others. However, pursuing a Bachelor in Teaching/Education and completing it, and then having second thoughts about it and withdrawing from the teaching field might be a regrettable predicament that I do not want to experience so I think it is much better to pursue Commerce and major in Accounting first. Furthermore, since Monash offers a double degree that involves Commerce but also an related IT course, Business Information Systems, it is something that I had chosen as my first preference.
The dilemma is that I've consulted the handbook and read the units that I will be undertaking for BIS, and they do not look really appealing to me. As opposed to when I am looking at something like Software Engineering, the units offered do look interesting and something that I wish to learn about. Computer Science, I also did look at, however, it seems to be more math inclined and a bit too convoluted for my likings and I am also not interested in any sort of researching field in the future, so I could finally wipe that off of my dilemmas.
In essence, the double degree is very appealing, because I believe it may allow employers in the future to consider that x does not just have a single degree, but also something alongside that may also complement the career, such as the BIS. So although I would not mind having something like BIS, it does not seem to be something that I am quite passionate about. It seems to be something more like that you would learn in real-life when you're already situated in a business environment, rather than learning about it on a lecture slide, etc. Perhaps I am sounding quite ignorant by simplifying it like that, so please offer any comments or suggestions as that would be greatly appreciated. The crux of the software engineering course as I stated earlier, is interesting, although is 'interesting' good enough to study it in university? Or should that be something I could learn in my own time if I were to only want it to be a hobby or utilise it in a side-job of some sort?
If I were to choose Commerce, and undertake units under Software Engineering, it is clear that obviously i will not have enough available units to do all the units under the Software Engineering course, but this could be a viable option I suppose? However, I would think BIS complements Commerce, but I am not sure as of now and in the future that employers are looking for people with those qualifications — that is, Commerce may just be enough. What are your thoughts and comments?
Thanks everyone,
