Literally it's name. Ex - plant. A part of a plant (typically stem) or pieces of tissue that is cut off from the plant and placed in isolation to observe any growth (tissue culture)

Well my question was a bit silly then - and I'm not even blonde -.-

can someone please explain how diabetic people can regulate their blood glucose levels. Well they can't really regulate it but you know what I mean.
Is it insulin they can't produce?

Diabetes is an endocrine disorder caused by a deficiency of insulin.
Yes they can't produce insulin, as the pancreas is in active.
And so they regulate it by injecting (medicinal benefits) the required amount of insulin in order to store glucose as glycogen.

there's type I and type II diabetes.
type I - is an autoimmune disease where your immune system destroy cells that produce insulin, and as a result you must take insulin shots (as you're unable to produce it)
type II - is when your cells don't respond to insulin or insulin isn't produced enough, so your cells are unable to take up glucose

Hey! Someone asked this recently, there were a couple of responses:

Nah, break it down:

Signal transduction - "trans" means to "alter/change" right? So -

- Signal transduction is the conversion of an external stimulus into one or more internal events (in the cell).

Just described what signal transduction is. But how is it done?

- through the binding of a hormone/signalling molecule to a specific receptor which triggers a cascade of events in the target cell

and what does this cascade lead to?

- which results in an amplified cellular response.

There you go, piece of cake. :D

It's not so bad! Lets see if I can whip up an analogy.

In Ancient Greece, there obviously weren't any telephones or social media etc. to keep people in contact via communication. However, because the Greeks were often in conflict with some empire or another, e.g. the Persian empire, they needed a way of getting messages from one place to multiple other places by land. In order to do this, there would be a network of messengers who would run to a point and deliver the message to a group of other messages, who would carry the original message to their intended target. The messenger who was given the initial message wouldn't continue on after he'd passed the message to the other messengers. Once the message has been passed on the recipients, the Greeks would be able to carry out some action as dictated by the message.

This is, in essence, what signal transduction is all about. We have an initial messenger that carries a signal to a cell, where it is received and passed on to a secondary messenger, which can then take the "message" (or signal) to target areas of the cell interior. From there, a cellular response to the initial stimulus can be performed. Note that the initial messenger never enters the cell. The rest is just filling in the required biological terminology!

We are using phenol red which turns pink in a basic solution, yellow in acidic

What would you expect to happen to the colour of pond water and indicator when a water plant is actively photosynthesising. justify your answer

Did this sac last term! Carbon dioxide combines with water to form carbonic acid, which is acidic. When a plant is actively photosynthesising, carbon dioxide is taken in by a plant and converted into oxygen, hence the water is basic and the phenol red will turn pink

I was just wondering if someone could clarify this for me:

How do antibiotics act as signalling molecules?
- Both are highly specific; that is, they only cause a response in the body if they are bonded to their specific receptors
-Both contribute to the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment
