hi everyone,

so i was wondering what we need to know from chapter 4 from the nature of biology book 2, for unit 3/4. it's about molecular biology in medical diagnosis and then the sub-topics are:

-molecular biology- the beginning
-detecting an enzyme deficiency: PKU
-medical diagnosis: prenatal testing
-medical diagnosis: testing after birth
-rational drug design
-developing vaccines
-manufacturing proteins for specific purposes

i've checked the study guide and it doesn't mention anything of this kind in the key knowledge. thanks in advance ! :)
Pls do not send me a pm about Aspire applications. The process has vastly changed since I applied.

You don't need to know chaper 4's content. However, reading through it wouldn't harm you. :)

Prenatal testing and testing after birth (as far as I know) are still part of the course and they come up later in unit 4 in relation to genetics, genetic screening and the ethics surrounding genetic testing...

you do need this chapter to an extent as the study design states...

'the role of enzymes as protein catalysts, their mode of action and the inhibition of the action of enzymes both naturally and by rational drug design'

Its just pointing towards knowing inhibition, as what happens with rational drug design. However, its clearly stated in FAQ that you don't need to know rational drug design.

you definitely need knowledge about rational drug design, the concept and what it is used for and how it can be used.
also you would need to be aware of the process of vaccination and how it works as well, like what is a vaccination.

In simple ways, rational drug design is basically finding the active site of something and designing a drug that can inhibit this active site to prevent disease or stopping the action of the substrate.
