I did Methods 3/4 in Year 11 and was not happy with my score, will there be a penalty of some sort if I do it again in Year 12 a second time?

The only 'penalty' is that if you get a lower score you have to keep it. I'm not 100% sure that's still in place though, anyone?

You got pretty decent scaling this year. You could get a higher raw score and a smaller scaled score.

I thought you could keep the higher score? But some people were telling me there were penalties even if you get a higher score or something

Nah I think some years ago you got a 10% deduction or something like that off your study score, but there are no repeat penalties. Unsure if you have to keep the recent oens.

Is it the higher raw score or scaled score that's counted?

Not sure if true, but I heard that for courses like medicine, where more than a high ATAR is needed, they actually take these things into consideration.
please don't shoot me if i'm wrong! :(

And PERHAPS if you're in the middle band, and there's one spot left with 2 people of the same ATAR then maybe that would be taken into consideration?
Let's say you're doing a maths heavy course and let's say a 35 in methods is a prerequisite, then I think if one person got 40 on the first attempt, another got 40 on the second attempt, they'll be likely the choose the former...

And once again, just another assumption.

Is it the higher raw score or scaled score that's counted?

Raw scores are only considered if you intend to do a course which has certain prerequisites ie a 25 in English.

Scaled scores are added to form an aggregate which will determine your ATAR.

I don't think that's the case, but I'm not 100% sure either.

I'm also considering re-taking methods and I've been told by my VCE coordinator that they will take the higher score out of the two (regardless of the year you did it). Although I'm not sure if he meant before scaling or after scaling, I'm ASSUMING after scaling. So if you get a higher score this year, then you get to keep it :)
Pls do not send me a pm about Aspire applications. The process has vastly changed since I applied.

I guess some sources to back up the claims in this thread:
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/faqs/vcepaststudents.aspx#H3N1005E
VCAA nor VTAC impose a repeat penalty.

http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/returntostudy.pdf
"If you repeat VCE units to improve your grades and you apply for tertiary entrance through VTAC, the ATAR will be calculated using the highest study scores, regardless of the year they were achieved."

I can't comment on whether that's the scaled or unscaled score they'll consider - in most cases the higher unscaled score should end up being the higher scaled score, but there's probably years where that wouldn't happen. I'm not sure on uni entry either.

However, I would seriously question the value of repeating a VCE subject, especially if you've done quite well and met the prerequisite score (usually 25 for most courses). It's not exactly stimulating to learn the same stuff twice.

You got a 41 in Methods. How is that bad, and worthy of a repeat?
The GOAL: Attain a RAW study score of 40+ in all my subjects.

Courses I would like to study in order of preference include: Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Biomedicine or Bachelor of Science.

They didn't say that the score was bad, they said that they were not happy with the score. And it was actually 38, unless you're going my the scaled score, in which case I'm not sure.

Sorry, I was referring to auds. But I guess you did make a fair point by saying "not happy with".
