Definitely going to be a few questions here and there throughout the year, so i'll get this started.

When comparing data and using the z-score, is it sufficient to say "This result is better because of the higher z-score"?

Be more specific.
How so?
The answer the book provides is always "Because the z-score is higher/lower in x, it is better than y"

It really depends on the context of the question. For example, a question i came across while i was completeing practice exams required you to explain whether x or y finished earlier. With x having a higher time (that is, x's time being greater than y's time) which results in a higher Z score, this does not necessarily mean that x performed better than y. In this scenario a lower Z score represents a better time.

Sorry, but that's not what i'm asking.
I'm just wondering what's a sufficient way in answering a z-score question.
In the scenario you provided, to answer the question, would you answer it: "Result y is better because of the lower z-score"?

Stick - Did you mean more specific as in add the values of the z-scores in the answer?
 i.e "Result 'y' which had a z-score of 1.4 is a far better score than result 'x' which had a z-score of 1.7" etc,etc?

Yeah, that's what I mean. The key is to leave no doubt in the assessor's eyes. Sorry for my own ambiguity. :P

What do you mean? On a CAS? If so, I think it depends on which one you have.

Could someone explain the process behind a question like:
2012 (exam 2) Q3 c)
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/exams/mathematics/2012/2012furmath2-w.pdf
What does the questions actually mean, and how would I go about answering

ALSO
2013 (exam 1) Q9
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/exams/mathematics/2013/2013furmath1-w.pdf
I think I have a general idea on how to do it, but getting nowhere..
Could someone provide the steps in solving?

Thanks!

*Figured it out.
