Well I think from reading the review in student union website and some other reviews and recommendation here, I'm seriously considering dropping out ESD1. I just don't know what I should take as an alternative to fulfill the credits reqs. Maybe a computer course instead? But then every class may already be full today.

Many things would be more useful than taking ESD1.  COMP10001 being one of them.  I don't know what your other subjects are - I assume you're already taking Physics 1 or 2.
2008 - 2010 | Bachelor of Production @ Victorian College of the Arts
2013 - 2015 | Bachelor of Science @ UoM (Bioengineering Systems)
2016 - 2017 | Master of Engineering (Biomedical) @ UoM

After brief deliberation, I decided to follow your advise and take COMP10001 instead. My timetable now looks better. There's just one clash with Physics practical but I hope it can be solved with 2nd subject release.  :)

^^ out of interest, how did you manage to just sit the Chemistry 2 exam and pass it well enough for them to let you be exempt from Level 1 Chemistry?  Do you just love Chemistry and you taught yourself content way beyond VCE Chemistry?  What's your intended major?

To people doing AM1 in semester 1 2014, are there any empty spots in classes and what time do classes run? I am doing calculus 2 in semester 1 but want to change to AM1 and don't wan't to withdraw from calculus 2 and lose my current spot in case AM1 clashed with my other subjects.
Would really appreciate your help.
Edit: I found the timing of the lectures here: https://sis.unimelb.edu.au/cgi-bin/subjects.pl/list/13792 but I don't know how to find out whether there are any spots left.
I can only do the 11am class so if that is full I won't risk dropping calculus 2 :(

You (probably) won't be able to overload second semester - they don't allow first years to overload. Even if you've done UMEP it's non-negotiable. Unless there's an exception for Chancellors but I haven't heard anything like that before.

you can overload actually if you get top marks in the first semester

I wouldn't bother withdrawing from calc 2 tonight, since (I'm pretty sure) you'll need to manually enrol into AM 1 at the uni because you're from another state and it'll say you haven't done the prereqs. If this is the case, I'd ask the uni to check for available spots right before you enrol. Also, I don't know what 11am class you're talking about. There are only 1 set of lectures so you don't need to worry about not getting into them. As for the tutorials and pracs which run straight after each other, they are available together from 1pm-3:15pm on Monday and Thursday (you can't have a prac/tute on Monday and a prac/tute on Thursday), and MAYBE 9am-11am on Thursday (can't see whether or not it's available because it's what I'm registered in).

The thing is that I am worried it would clash with my current classes. I am doing biology at 9am, chemistry at 10am and physics advanced at 1pm so the only time I don't have classes is 11am - 1pm and after 2pm.

I did a 2 week summer intensive program in the summer holidays before year twelve that covered the entire first year chemistry course. I don't have an intended major atm, still keeping options open.

I've heard someone overloaded in second semester of first year with an average of 75% in first semester.

Hmm this is extremely unusual - the student centres are meant to have a blanket ban (i.e. under no circumstances) on first year overloading and 75% while being a good average wouldn't be enough for them to bend that.

It's more likely that they didn't apply to overload officially and just managed to put in 5 subjects online and no one picked up on it - the IT system is so dodgy you'd be surprised at how often this happens, but it certainly isn't the norm. I've never ever heard of a first year overloading, though I could be wrong. Interesting.

Ha. Yeah, the IT system really sucks. Who knows, maybe it will somehow let me register for classes for five subjects.
I asked someone at the science centre and they didn't exactly say "no" regardless. They still gave me a form to fill in come end of first semester.

Yeah I know people that have managed to do up to 6 subjects a semester. Ridiculous.
