Concession Card

Hi. I was just wondering when is it possible to get a concession card for this year? I had the chance while I was still at school, but I turned 17 around the exam period and never thought to get it.

Also, how do you get the concession card via your Uni?

It is definitely possible to get a concession card as a university student, and you can organise for one prior to the commencement of uni. I'm not sure about the systems for other universities (I assume it'll be much the same), but all the details for an application through Monash can be found here. It involves filling out a form then taking it to a train-station office and getting your concession card (and your concession Myki) processed there.

Let me know if you have any other questions :)

That should be fine, I reckon. Mind you, the university year generally commences at the beginning of March so you may like to have an application ready for when your current concession card expires.

Cool, thanks for the help. So basically I have to wait until enrolment day to get one and pay full fare until then. :(

With respect to Public Transport, you're automatically granted a 'concession' status if you are under the age of 17. If your ID says that you are under the age of 17 you should be fine. Usually if you tell a ticket inspector that you're under the age of 17 ie. say that you are 16, it should work, without having to show ID.

Instead of getting a Transport Concession card, you should check if you're eligible for a Health Care Concession Card, as that is valid for transport as well, I believe!

Yep, literally just did this. They reminded me to get one once I'm 17. Although the one time I was asked to show ID, I was actually 16 at the time. I just don't want to risk a fine though.

I believe so, but I could be wrong. My concession card has an expiry date on it anyway.

Just to remove any ambiguity for anyone reading this: The concession card and the concession Myki are two different cards, you need the first one to be able to use the second one as a uni student.

So the 'Victorian Public Transport Concession Card' is just a laminated piece of paper with your photo stuck onto it; this is what you get when you turn in your application form to the train station office. This needs to be renewed every year.

The concession myki is the actual myki you use to pay for public transport. The above concession card gives you the 'right' to use the concession myki above the age of 16.

Oh I get it now. I didn't fill in any forms though and I don't have the Victorian public transport concessiom card but just myki card. So can I still apply for a uni concession card ?

Absolutely! For Monash, the application form is available in the link I posted in my first reply to OP. To download the form you need to be able to log in to WES though.
