Tax file number
« on: January 17, 2014, 08:42:42 pm »

I completely forgot about applying for my Tax File Number earlier in the year. I already just submitted it after reading my first round offer after the offer saying that I need to hand in stuff along with my Tax File Number by the 24th of January. I'm not sure how long it'll take for me to get it, I'm guessing less than month. Is it possible to give my TFN after, if not - what happens if I don't have my TFN by then?

I would like to get a response in regard to this too. Is it possible to ring them up and ask for our tfn after it has been processed?

Also, what if we got a tax file number ages ago, but were stupid and forgot about it and lost the piece of paper thingy.

How to we go about finding out what our number is?

Guys I only doubled with Arts because I couldn't let go of Psych and wanted to keep doing it as a major at least, but I took International Studies on a whim after the info session just because I needed a minor, and I love it so much! It's 3:29am and I had to share this, I think I'm majoring in it bye.

You don't need the TFN immediately during enrolment. You need it to fill out the HECS-HELP form (which you can initially do without the TFN), and then supply the TFN before the census date or other administrative date (usually sometime in March, varies uni to uni). For peace of mind, ask the uni about what to do, there's always quite a few students in this same situation and they'll have a system of dealing with it in place.

You should treat it as a matter of urgency to apply for a TFN, or find out what yours is though.

wow, my sister was in exactly the same position about a couple of week ago, she was really freaked out. I'll tell you exactly what I told her. You don't need  a TFN to enroll you just need it to apply for HECS-HELP, once you get your TFN then you can apply for HECS-HELP and everything is all good guy. About 3 weeks ago I made my sis apply for one and it arrived in the mail last week, so if everything goes smoothly you should also get your TFN within 2 weeks. :)

Apply now, don't delay but don't stress about it either. It's like when you fill out a tax form for employment; there's a box you can check that says something like "I don't have a TFN yet but I've applied for one". And you get a grace period long enough for you TFN to be issued.

Edit: This is for the HECS-HELP form, not actual enrolment, like MagicGecko and Laser explained above.

I'd call them up (1300 720 092) and ensure you don't already have one, because I completely forgot that I already applied for one through school a couple years ago and was about to apply for a new one

I applied for one late last year and received the letter on the 6th. Processing time about 10 days, don't stress all.

How do you get a tax file number, can you do it over the internet?
I have a registration day at my uni (monash) on friday and they say bring the tax file number as well as student id and offer email. Hopefully won't be a problem that I won't have the number???

Tutoring in Maths Methods (50 + Premier's) & other stuff. PM if interested :)

I didn't have my number when I did registration but I brought the receipt. You could get forms from school but I got mine from the post office (because I'd finished school and it was holidays anyway)

You can't apply for one over the internet entirely. You have to fill out an online form, print it out and take it to the Australian post office, there you will have an interview. Though not all post offices do tax file numbers. Here are the steps if it helps:
