In the first two weeks of school I have to do my persuasive oral presentation.
I first thought of arguing against the shark cull in WA, but then realised the debate is fairly simplistic with not much depth to expand on. I then started researching arguments for and against embryonic stem cell research, but found that scientists are moving towards iPS instead of embryonic, so the debate isn't all too relevant.
Just after some ideas as to what I could do.
Oh, and it has to be an issue in PRINT MEDIA since September 2013.
Also, it has to be an active DOUBLE SIDED debate. It can't be something that is so blatant that everyone will agree upon.
Personally I chose the topic on climate change policy (carbon tax/ETS vs direct action)
However I considered the following topics as well, which are currently very topical:
-Constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians
-Sentencing/Parole board reforms
-Media regulations (following Murdoch's election bias)
-Voluntary Euthanasia
-Australia's role in Nauru (asylum seekers, judicial instability etc)
-Bamboo/Glass ceiling in Australia
-Same sex marriage (although, a lot of people would be arguing this)
- Asylum seekers (a lot of people arguing this)
You could also focus on the conflicts/division in Sudan, Somalia, Iran, Korean Peninsula, Syria, Thailand etc and argue how Australia has a role to play in resolving this as a member on the UN Security Council.
