Hi Taati,
A lot of the big, independent schools have scholarships for students beginning in year 10. Applications for these usually close around end of February or early March. Testing and interviews take place around April - May.

Select entry schools MHS, Nossal, Mac. Rob do take some students for year 10, however these places are quite competitive.

Hope this helps  :)

Most schools do their big intakes at years 7, 9 and 11, though selective entry schools also often require you to be on a waiting list for a year or two. If you put your child's name down now, you might get into a year 11 scholarship/entrance exam. There are some other options for music/ sport scholarships, otherwise this website provides the test papers and might be able to help you find the right school: <http://www.acer.edu.au/scholarship/state/vic>

Try out for Scotch or Melbourne Grammar :). Not sure if the scholarship applications have closed though.

Most of the big private schools should have something for yr 10 2015 entry but applications probably close soon so get on it ASAP. Just work out which schools you want and check their websites etc. to see what's happening.

There's limited yr 10 entry for the select entry public schools so again work out which of those schools you want and check their sites.

If you want to work out which indepedent/select entry schools there are your best bet is too look at the VCE rankings and most of those type of schools would be up the top (I can't think of anywhere else there's a good list).

I'd definitely recommend trying out for john monash science school  . The learning curriculum is great here and it's also a lot less competitive to get into . http://www.jmss.vic.edu.au/  (link to the official website)

The aforementioned VCE rankings, although I'd take it with a grain of salt. There is a fair bit of variation from year to year, and a school higher up on the list is not necessarily a better educational environment.

Your best bet would be to contact those schools individually, and (in the case of private schools) ask about scholarships, or with selective high schools (Mac.Rob, Melbourne High, Suzanne Cory, Nossal, John Monash Science School) ask about entrance exams.

Make sure to check out all the statistics that are released for every school in the state. They will definitely help you try to limit down the choices since there are so many good schools around victoria!
Since your child is already in year 9, i would recommend trying out for John Monash for year 10 if your child has a strong interest in science and maths.

It really depends where you live and the schools around there!

I'm going to leave out everything in regards to scholarships for selective schooling but there are scholarships offered by the DEECD for all year levels in High school! So long as you fit certain criteria (like financial background etc.) then you can apply (keep in mind that most of them have already passed their deadline but some remain for the higher year levels)! Keep this website ready towards the end of the year as well!

There are other 'programs' offered in Year 10 (so next year but I thought you might like to know) like the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar's Program as well as the Monash Scholars.
