EDUC10051: Sports Coaching assessment etc

I'm not sure if there are many people here who have taken this subject in the past, but I'm considering it and would like some advice about the assessment.

What's involved in the 'Coaching unit and rational' (50%) and the 'presentation' (25%)?

I'm a bit weary of taking subjects with big chunks of assessment rather than little incremental tests etc. especially if there's group work involved (is there any?). But I like sport and I hear it's a relaxing subject that won't detract from my core units, which I want to do well in.

any comments about the subject and the assessment?

cheers AN

This is what turtle kindly sent me:

Hey Melon,

Ok so the presentation is a powerpoint and mini speech on a coaching method you learn in lectures. I got a dud as my partner, but i said to him just leave it to me haha. Its really easy, and it only took me a few hours to write the speech and make the powerpoint.

And for the 50% thingo, you just design a training program for a person participating in a sport of your choosing. So i just designed a running program for a beginner middle distance runner since I do a bit of athletics, so it was easy for me to just copy my own training. You have to justify why you selected certain training sessions. For example, on the 1st day of the program I said something like "X will alternate 1 min walk with 2 min jog for 25 mins because they are a beginner, and we want them to gradually build up their training without them becoming injured, or becoming overwhelemed".

It is VERY easy to do well in. It was my favourite subject at uni in 1st yr because it was fun, and an an easy subject to do well in.

I highly recommend it :)

Thanks a lot for your mini-review and I've made my mind up to do it in first sem.

If anyone else is doing it, maybe we can put our tutes together and buddy up for the presentation or whatnot. Lmk!

Hey MelonBar, I've been doing this subject in summer this year (not sure if different if done during semesters) but our 25% presentation was a task that required you and your partner (you select a chosen sport to focus on) to do a mini coaching session with your group. Then you hand in some documents afterwards like risk assessment, session plan, swot (self reflection analysis), and other bits and bobs.
Judging on how the subject was carried out this summer I'd recommend you do it then, it's pretty good. It's a week long intensive, every day you're there from about 9-4. You have lectures and seminars and practicals. You pick a sport to focus on early in the week (they'll lump everyone together for similar sports) and towards the end of the week you and your partner coach the group. You'll definitely be active, because when other pairs do their coaching you're the 'students' and you've got to run around/whatever they have planned for you. (And the practicals earlier in the week require you to be sporty things (it's like a watered-down version of school pe classes so dw) with your seminar group). The other pieces you hand in for that task that I mentioned above are due the week after the intensive.
The other two assessments (25% and 50%) are both due three weeks after the intensive. So the whole thing is done and dusted in a month (tbh though only one week of uni, and the rest of the work shouldn't take you three weeks). The 50% is the same as what Turtle did. The other 25% (for summer at least) is 3 online quizzes relating to the readings (all available online) and lectures - these are all open book but you have to do them in one go. And as part of that you have to do a online coaching course, it's on some govt website, you've just got to complete it and hand in your certificate of completion as part of the assessment.
Anyway so I've been rambling on but I definitely think if possible you should consider doing it in Feb if you're not busy - it's over quickly and you can do 3 subjects in semester later :)

When people say 'it's easy to do well in' - can you define what you mean by 'doing well'? (As in Passing, H1, etc)

And does the session that you design have to increase fitness? Or can it be like technique or something (for a highly technical sport)

One more thing- could you design a program for a sport like tennis where rackets and a court/net is needed or swimming where a pool is needed? Or does it need to be a basic session that everyone can do without equipment in a basic sports hall?

No it can be anything. It is a "virtual program", and no one actually has to do it. You just pretend the virtual person you are making it for has access to a pool or tennis courts, for example.

No it can be a training program to improve any skill/technique/fitness component for any sport.
E.g. you could probably do a training program for a beginner darts player if you really wanted to!

Both :) Personally, I think a 12 year old court pass this subject. And it is easy to do well in as well. You just need to put in a little bit of effort, and be comprehensive in the training program in explaining why you selected different activities/stretches/warm up drills/warm down activities, etc.

thanks for your input. I wonder if the bolded part applies to the semester 1 teaching period as well? What if I wanted to choose a non field sport like swimming?

I'm not sure whether it applies during semesters, but I thought I'd just point it out as it seemed different to what Turtle did and some people seemed to be a bit surprised that you actually had to run around and coach
I'm pretty sure you can choose non field sports like swimming. It's just that when you're coaching your group (you'll be put together in a group with other sports) you have to teach them stuff to do with swimming on land, maybe stroke practice (sorry don't know much about swim coaching), because you won't have access to a swimming pool. I think there was one person who wanted to do swimming and first the lecturer said it was fine but then she later changed, I'm not sure whether it was due to her changing her mind or the lecturer deciding that swimming was not an option.

But then again it probably depends on the number of students who pick each sport
