Official clubs and O-Week thread 2014

I noticed we're getting a lot of specific O-Week related questions lately so i thought i'd start up an O-Week thread to run alongside our jaffy tips thread. Ask any questions or share anything you've found at O-Week! I thought it'd also be a great place to talk about the clubs Monash offers (which is bucket-loads), anyone planning on joining any this year? I can answer questions about the sports clubs (in particular kendo and taekwondo).

A list can be found here (http://www.monashclubs.org/Clubs/). We have everything from a juggling/firetwirling club, mahjong club, video games club, harry potter society, various religious clubs, various ethnic/cultural clubs, political clubs. Everything you could really want and more! (If not you could always start your own too). If i do join any (kind of hard juggling the time with my travel), it'll probably be the kendo club again (i'll be starting it as a jaffy considering when i left it, so, if any of you join or are interested in joining, i'll see you there!), maybe the boardgames and video games club but i'll see. Definitely is something out there for everyone though!

O-Week is a great time to collect free shit. Get as much of it as possible, stationary shopping done for the year. A map can be helpful, don't be afraid to ask someone who looks like they know what they're doing for directions.

It depends how much of an asshole they want to be when they're giving you MSA discounts, i'd get one just incase. Particularly off campus places probably won't believe you unless you get a new sticker. If you don't use it for discount purposes though i don't see why you'd need one (except bling of course). The MSA have a stall all o-week, its fairly large. You could go and get a sticker then! Bit of a waste of time though, they have a permanant desk upstairs in the campus center so you could go when uni starts.

Just want to remind all the jaffys traveling to O-week by train, bus or tram (how..?) that you need a valid concession card. Yes, we know its your first day, uni just started but they still could conceivably fine you. Monash automatically provide you with the forms, print it and take it to a station. You could either do it at home if you have a colour printer or at one of the Monash libraries. Again, i know its just O-Week but you never know what your luck could be. A few days is probably alright but anything beyond that is too risky. Either travel full fair after that or get a concession card.

If you get hungry, the jaffy tips thread listed some food places. Most of them are in the campus center. If you want a drink, there are free water fountains around campus (filtered water too), so, you can BYO bottle. You can find toilets in pretty much any large building. The Menzies (biggest building on campus and home to Arts, if you get lost) has them in the basement (gotta go down the stairs). So does the campus center and the libraries. Most of the large lecture theaters will have them too within the building complex.

Don't do what i did either and buy all your books first up. It'll be real shit carrying them around. The Monash university store inside the campus center does sell pens, rulers, etc if you need that kind of thing and it is branded with the Monash logo. It's also where you can pick up a Monash hoodie if you want to (seem to be popular with jaffys).

ENORMOUSLY shameless plug for MonJSS - the Monash Jewish Students' Society:

We're giving away some pretty great stuff to members this year, and membership is only $3 for MSA cardholders ($8 for non-cardholders). We'll be serving great vegetarian food as well for those inclined to drop by and sign up, and we encourage everyone  - not only Jewish students - to sign up. One of the major benefits of membership is great discounts at a number of off- and on-campus shops, for example Coffee Wise, Artichoke and Whitebait, Cinque Lire and several other outlets.

MonJSS, as a chapter of AUJS (the Australasian Union of Jewish Students), was founded in 1961 and is religiously and politically pluralistic so we have members from across the political and religious spectrum, all joining together for fun on- and off-campus events, and intellectually stimulating speakers in many disciplines from around the world.

If you'd like to join (and I think you should!) or even if you just want to find out more about MonJSS's history and ideologies, come by and say hello! :)

You can check us out on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/MonJSS

Did you pay Via Credit Card or did you just enter your details? If you just registered your details you need to go to the MSA desk and pay and get the sticker put on.

That was a pretty swanky shameless plug! Nice work! Hell, even i'm tempted to join after that. Will you guys also have a stall during club week (or whatever it is, you know the one during semester..) for non-jaffy? Maybe you could tell us what sort of events you guys hold as well.

Before i forget as well, i'd urge all you jaffys to consider joining the MSA. It's $20 for the entire year (around there) which is really a steal. You get discounts on a lot of the food outlets surrounding campus like maccas and subway. You get discounts for the food outlets inside campus (how good they are definitely varies, no one wants 10% off juice for a place where no one buys juice), including 20% off sir johns upstairs (the pub with food). You also get discounted club membership ($5 less for each club..i think). You get cheaper tickets to events on campus as well (Oktoberfest, etc). Even if you don't give a toss about the union, even in purely monetary terms it really could work to your advantage.

We have a Returning Students barbecue in Week 1 (also with vegetarian options because everyone's invited!) for us non-Jaffys! We're a pretty large club (about 300 new members signed up at last year's O-Week) but we always look to cater for everyone. We're also interested in doing joint events with other clubs and societies, so if you're part of a club executive and you'd like to do something like this, get in touch!

For people like you, KP, who are interested in the philosophy of religion, we also run talks almost every week on sometimes on religion, sometimes on philosophy and sometimes on current-day politics (you don't have to be a member to go to these either! Hit me up if you want some more info about these :) ).

I paid via credit card..I have the receipt and everything...I guess I should just drop in and collect the sticker...I've seen these machines which scan your ID card..that's why I was wondering whether I need the sticker or not..I guess not everyone has these machines

MSA membership seems like a pretty good decision if you're planning on joining more than 4 clubs, looks like it'll be saving me a good $45 on clubs alone :D

Would it be okay if I joined a bunch of the free clubs without actually participating too much? Maybe in the occasional BBQ if you catch my drift ;)

Not sure what you mean about ID card scanning machines, maybe they're new or i've just never seen them. Either way, probably worth the 5 minute trip if you're already on campus to get the sticker i reckon :p.

Not even just on clubs, assuming you like to eat food instead of photosynthesise, you can get some discounts around campus on that too. I might also be joining the SVGA (videogames) this year so i might see you there! Might also check out Amnesty, didn't even know we had a chapter. No idea what VGEN is though.. Never even crossed my mind to join clubs that become free after the MSA discount, that's pretty amazingly crafty of you man.

I don't think they'll care if you participate at all, they realise people are busy and might not be able to come often or at all. If you're a member of the club i can't see why you wouldn't be entitled to grab some of their BBQ'ed goods.

It's absolutely fine, plenty of jaffys go on a club-joining spree during o-week then never turn up to any events, so you'd definitely be welcome at barbecues! What are clubs for if not for a free feed?!

About concession cards. If you got one last year for school, it's be valid for the rest of the month, so you should be good for O-Week. :)
