How was everyone's first day?

To be honest, I was a little overwhelmed hearing some of the information at the study and life support skills sessions, but I'm glad it happened now rather than next week. I guess I've had this very idealistic image of university until now - throughout VCE it seemed like the most special goal that I worked tirelessly towards achieving, and once I achieved it I became a little bit too complacent about the difficulty of the journey that lies ahead. Hearing about how to go about studying for lectures and structure academic writing was a tad daunting, as was looking properly through subject details in the LMS. Perhaps in my mind I made out first year university to be like a walk in the park compared to VCE. After a 15 week break of doing absolutely nothing doing even one hour of homework seems impossible, despite all the hard work and long hours in Year 12. Anyway, I'm thankful this happened at this stage, although I think I'll probably experience similar feelings when I learn of other things later in the week. Did anyone else feel the same or was it just me? :P

And nope, I already expected uni to be more work than school.

I was sort of expecting the same thing, but it was more a moment of "shit, this is real now" hahaha.

Maybe I wasn't trying hard enough at the freebies - I got a free coffee and a free pen. :|

I had to wait 50 minutes for my camp ticket! Did you miss out? :( or just didn't want one?

I was mainly surprised by the amount of resources allocated to the union/all the societies and support groups for the students. It is a very welcome change from an austere private school environment, where they deny you of basic civil liberties in an effort to 'man you up'.

I wasn't too surprised by the workload though. I always knew uni would be hard - I'm dating a third year science student, and seeing the study that goes into entry exams like the GAMSAT scared me into working my ass off in year 12 haha. Still, after such a long holiday.. I still don't feel ready to work again.

I really don't think first year is that hard though. I'm sure you guys will be okay :P

First year SHOULD be ok, if my knowledge of the first year physics and chemistry science courses is anything to go by. However, you biomed kids have 8 am starts so that'll suck. Still, you have a more coherent cohort than I do so I'd say it cancels out.

We're just lucky the GAMSAT isn't our concern anymore! :D

First day of O-week was terrible. Mainly because it was too hot.
Today was ok. I found the introductory lectures great except BIOL10004. The lecture was really messy, the theatre was over-crowded and I found it useless.
Physics lecture was by far the best. Roger Rassool is really awesome and his jokes are actually funny (jokes lecturers make are usually lame). His introductory lecture was surprisingly engaging.

Today wasn't nearly as overwhelming as yesterday (I'm in the right mentality now) but it was still a massive information overload. The assessment structure was particularly confusing - getting my head around what is due and when was especially difficult. I've just spent 2 hours going properly through the LMS and writing every single task down in my diary and only now does it make sense. :S

Later this week I need to get around to that introductory work.

Do you mind sharing what's the important keypoints in the physics intro? I somehow missed the lecture because it didn't appear in my itenary when I first planned my day..(Like a week ago)

I only went to a couple of lectures and I thought they were pretty useless...

Mainly, I've just been enjoying all the freebies. And starting to try to find my way around the place, haha.
